"as you welly it, the fooker gets cheaper"

is what he's trying to say, in a long-winded way :)

mechanics in dealerships are crap, they dont deserve to call themselves mechanics one bit.

i had a saxo 1.0 with a dodgy engine, took it to a citroen garage who charged me £80 to tell me the engine head is gone and needed replaced (and quoted close to £500 to do the job).
Took it to a local mechanic who told me 3rd cylinder was down, and 2nd was getting washed... he dismantled the engine over a weekend, inspected the head (which was fine) and only charged me £120 for the weekends work.

I got a clio now, 1.5dci model.. its been back to the garage 3 times for engine problems and every time they replaced the decoder ring because the electronic brain says so... they havnt sat down and physically checked the engine (which co-incidentally renault are aware of problems with the DCI diesel range of engines but refuse to do a recall on because of the costs involved!)
mind its not costing me anything due to the 3yrs warranty.. just when it comes to the 3rd year it'll be tossed back and i'll go buy a new car again.

Ok here's one for you.

My previous car was a Skyline GTR. Now, with these cars being somewhat exclusive (and in most cases imports) the Nissan main dealers won't touch them. Your only choice for servicing and tuning is to take them to specialist garages.

Anyway, after suffering a blown intercooler hose one day (which was quite dramatic since it gives the impression that the engine has blown!) I had my car towed to the specialist the previous owner had been using..

A few days later I received a phone call telling me that they were "unhappy with the engine". No specific explanation, just mentioned some random engine components along with the words "tired", etc. Anyway, I asked them on the phone "what do you think needs to be done?" to which I was told "we don't know without taking the engine apart"... I said, verbatim, "well, Id like to know whats wrong but I will have to check my finances first and get back to you" (since even being a non-mechanic I realised what they were talking about could be expensive and I'm not financially able to write blank cheques and throw them at garages)..

A week later I receive a phonecall from them which started with them saying "we've taken the engine out of the car and to pieces, would you like to know whats wrong?" After I'd gotten over the shock of the first sentence, they then reeled off a list of parts that - despite the car was perfectly fine beforehand (and actually serviced/tuned by them!) - came to about £7500+VAT. Yep, seriously.

Anyway, because of this I decided I would have to sell the car "as is". To cut a very long story short it was "bought" by another specialist, who then told me there was basically nothing wrong with the car. £4000 later (I decided at this point since the engine was in pieces anyway to upgrade some bits) I had the car back as good as new... although it never needed an engine stripdown in the first place. £1000 of that £4k went to the first garage, their "charges" for doing a job I never asked them to do in the first place.

SkyLine = impressed :)

That garage = not impressed :(

Working in the motor trade I come across this all the time, when people bring thier bikes along for sevicing and tuning they are quite often pretty suspicious the first time, as maybe they have had bad experiences at other shinier shops.
Thing is though, Ive been a punter too, I know what its like to be kept in the dark and fed bullshit, particularly about eta's of customers bikes. So I really try to avoid making wild claims I cant keep, especially about "collect it this afternoon " type stuff :)
All the same, some people still come into our ramshackle collection of buildings and sheds, sniff then bugger off to Pot plant city, where they get a smarmy salesman and a bill to match.

Funnily enough, that BMW dealer in Laceby is where my Dad always used to get his BMWs from.

Aye they've been great, highly recommended, they sorted my brother out no problem. I also think they contacted BMW GB on my brother's behalf.
