Are there health issues with only 6 hour sleep each night?

Been calculating for funsies and noticed that if i cut my sleep from 8 hours to 6 hours / night, i get a month extra "living" time(means awake time, months worth of) per year.

That's quite a lot.

Was just wondering if 8 hours is the needed, if six hours is enough, would there be health problems etc or is it simply a matter of adjustment.

Everyone has a different body that requires a different amount of sleep. forcing yourself to have too little sleep is not good if your body argues with it.

When I am back into training - as right now - if I don't get 8 hours sleep I feel physically ill the next day. Depends on how you spend your waking hours I suppose. Hard physical exercise requires rest so your body can repair itself.

I'm thinking i DO sleep too much, it's hard to test it on a week day as you would have to go to sleep when you're actually tired and wake up when you do, not because work dictates it.

I'm mostly in need of mental rest, lockering info etc.

That's why i'm thinking less would suffice.

The ammount of sleep you need is completely individual. Some people are ok with 4 hours, some need 9 or 10.
If that helps: I sleep 6 hours / day for a couple of years now, simply because that´s my time pattern. Can´t get to bed before 12PM, have to get up at 6:30ish. So far, I can´t see any health issues.

Then i guess you sleep too much :p

When i work i sleep around 5-6 hours, when i'm off i just sleep until i wake up, sometimes its 5 hours, sometimes its 12.

If you dont feel shit after 6 hours your fine, but might take some time for the "body" to get used to it. If you normally sleep over 8 hours.

I think there was some research done to say 6-8 hours is best or something? maybe I'm wrong but hmm.

I can't really sleep in longer than 8 hours. At uni I was always up at 6:30 no matter what, I find it real difficult to sleep past 8 o clock, no matter how late I get to bed.

Sleep cycles are approximately every 2 hours (each person is different, but 2 hours is the norm). If you wake up at the end of your cycle, you will be refreshed. Here's an example.

I fell asleep at midnight and woke up at 6am for work midweek. I was fine.
I feel asleep at 11pm and woke up at 6am for work and felt utterly shit. I had an extra hour in bed, but I woke up midcycle.

This makes sense and one thing I notice is when you have the dreaded 'lay in'. You go back to sleep for about an hour and wake up ready to start the day. That 1 hour starts your cycle again so you're fucked. Think of it this way. You ever had a lay in and felt even worse for having it?

Tohtori something which may fascinate you - This group of people working for a mens magazine (FHM i think) found you could have a 20 minute sleep every 4 hours. At first no one could fall asleep for 20 minutes. Then later on they really struggled to wake up. Some people quit because they were unable to cope with it, but some people found it easy.

These journalists said they could do so much more in the day. Things like hobbies or deadlines for work are no longer a problem.
In the end they stopped doing it. To be fair, it's a little weird if you go round a friends house and have a 20 minute sleep lol.

They found this from some research so I think you can probably google sleep patterns and find it?

I wake up at pretty much dead on 6.30 every day whether its the weekend or not, no matter what time I go to bed. I sleep like a log though, if I set an alarm for 6 it will not wake me up.

My wife sleeps for about 8-9 hours in the week and 12-15 hours at the weekend. She still complains about being tired though, nothing wrong with her according to the doctor.

Personally I think she tries to sleep for too long which means the sleep she does get is in-efficient.

I think its supposed to be either 6 or 8. Personally I only sleep 4 most nights but occasionally 6, thats all I need I can sleep more but theres no need I dont get tired so I find it more productive to just sleep less :p

the 2 hr cycle thingy is really interesting and its something b2 gets a lot he'll says stuff like "aw i woke up at 5 this morning felt fine but thouht sod getting up now then went back to sleep and felt like shite when i woke up" which is almost exactly what bahu said!

Last wednesday i woke up at 5am and i thought ah blow it ill get up now, had some brekkie and started work at about 5:30 had a great day, accomplished loads, thought right ho i'll do it again on my next day off work and maximise study, woke up at 5:20 felt a bit ropey, made brekkie felt a bit worse tried to do soem work almost fell off me chair so went back to bed and it turned out i'd caught a cold and was ill lol, but still i fully intend to do it again (the 5am thing..not the getting ill thing) because i had such a great day.

we're all so different in sleep patterns that you cant really get this kind of stuff from other peoples research you need to do some research yourself, as the advert said, suck it and see...ok maybe not, but try out different sleep techniques and report back with what works!
