Facebook announces mobile OS
In a recent interview, the head of the mobile department at Facebook, George Orwell, announced that programmers had started work on a new mobile OS called BigBrother. Orwell stated, that the current version 1.984 was nearly perfect and that negotiations with HTC and Nokia were going well.

Pretty interesting, if you ask me.

Facebook certainly is quite a size, but I would expect Apple are in a better position. How many iTunes users are there? Probably a couple of hundred million worldwide?

I think it would be easier for Apple to move into the social side than Facebook invading anything Apple do. Given that iTunes is a mostly paying service, this contrasts to Facebook's free service that is essentially a vehicle to allow trivial bullshitting and photos of people getting drunk. At least iTunes serves a purpose that integrates with their hardware.

If anything, my social group are getting bored with Facebook with some inactive altogether.

either that is a joke or they have a good sense of humor at facebook :p

They would be honest about it at least... :)

itunes have from what i found ~200 million store accounts.

Facebook has 750 million users. And if even half of those starts using their music store, itunes will be in a VERY bad spot because most likely a lot of those will also be itunes users...

And another thing, itune won't allow you to play their music anywhere you like, if facebook allows this, then itunes will do even worse.

and how many of those itunes users are only using it as its the best of the worst or only as a media player (not shopping). If amazon made a proper store for their music or Facebook created something similar alot of people will jump ship.

Also if Facebook allows online storage and streaming to all Facebook logged in devices then it will definitely take Apple customers away

The only real social thing Apple has done (iTunes Ping) was pretty much a giant flop.

I wouldn't say that Facebook is Apple's biggest threat, they're probably keeping them at bay as Apple couldn't agree to Facebook's terms when it came around to them wanting to use Facebook's API for Ping integration. I'm assuming they couldn't get an agreement for using it in iOS 5 as well - which is why they went for Twitter integration instead.

Android is probably a bigger threat to Apple, but they may be keeping Facebook at a comfortable distance to ensure they don't rely on them.

I think we're all making fairly large "what if" presumptions that Facebook users want music and iTunes users want social networking. Personally, I'm happy using Facebook for social and iTunes for iPod related jazz. There are other music services that compliment iTunes nicely (not to mention illegal downloads) in the way of Spotify, Amazon's music thingy and Last.fm. It's already a fairly saturated market with plenty of offerings.

Facebook is mind numbingly boring, I will bet my bollocks that it's a passing phase that will diversify.

Facebook is not a threat as its revenue stream is only based on users of the website. Even FB games will drop off if people stop using FB as their main social network. FB has an entrenched user base but we've seen what happened to MySpace. FB had a cleaner user interface. Google has an advantage because it doesn't need to put advertising on Google+ in order to monetise it, therefore it will always have a cleaner user interface.

Apple has a variety of revenue streams and it's much less easy for it's users to move away. It doesn't rely on advertising because people are willing to pay huge margins on their products.

Apple has very little to fear from FB.

Apple is sitting on a shitload of cash and securities and it looks like they really don't know what to do with it.

As ridiculous as it sounds, I suspect for many people, on the move access to Facebook has been one of the biggest selling points for the smartphone industry and is probably in part responsible for the industry success.

I daresay FB may release their own cheap FB orientated smart phone, but that just means that other manufacturers are going to have to come up with some better USP's for their particular brand. I don't see apple going into social networking any time soon, rather they will focus on getting features like FaceTime to work properly or reducing the cost of their handsets.

I have had a google+ account for a few weeks and I am still quite dubious to be honest. I doubt that there is much google can do in this area that FB doesn't have the resources to do with a much larger community.

I don't see a facebook phone taking off. I mean, all phones can already do facebook. Theirs would do facebook, but not the Apple app store, not the Android marketplace. Why would you buy one instead of an Android phone if you want something cheap?

It wouldn't even be enough to buy one of their own products.

This. I saw a thing for some phone with a facebook button. Couldn't help thinking it reminded me of Three's "Skype" phone and laughed.

Facebook is a good way of tagging mates in photos and logging into sites when you CBA to remember passwords.
