They're only as good as the person using them IMO.
Avoid the big names to start with, ruling out Kaspersky, Mcafee and Norton.
For free, either Avast! Anti Virus or AVG Free are very good indeed.
A lot of people have good success with Nod32, I personally thought it was more annoying than Vista's UAC and not entirely effective.

i wouldnt recomend avg. had terrible problem with it. it detected a trojan in a pdf file wouldnt let me deleate. then would crash my oc with random pop ups about the pdf.
I used to use both AVG and Bitdefender before, both worked as far as virus protection goes however I had issues with both with certain games ultimatley having to uninstall bitdefender for example just to start a game up.
Using a newer version of AVG free atm (latest dunno what build exactly) seems good so far tho, had no slow down/popup issues or anything.

Both of the protection programs listed above are set to scan every day at 2am its been lovely and clean so far. And anything that AVG/Spybot doesn't pick up Panda Scan usually picks it up.
I uninstalled Avast after about 2 minutes of installing due to the annoying sounds most likely you can turn them off but I was so annoyed at the sounds it went straight away.
