Anyone know when Geforce2 Ultra will be available in the shops?

Here in the UK that is.

I understand Hercules, Creative and Elsac have cards out - everywhere is reveiwing them, but retailers are still just selling the normal Geforce 2's.

What about regular retailers such as Gameplay, PC World, Game or EB? How soon before they have it?

That overclockers place looks a right rip - the normal prophet 2 is £38 extra so how much extra have they slapped on the ultra.

I've seen Creative GF2Ultra in a few shops now. Including my local EB. But they cost about 450 quid in shops. I got mine from Dabs for 380. Best not to turn your nose up at 70 quid...

Not that I would ever waste my money on an ultra.

Is the ultra really worth £400 ish quid?

I've read the reviews and yeah it's fast but wtf for? my Voodoo 5 5500 keeps up with every game on the market atm and with all the eyecandy on. £400 buys a lot of much needed HDD space or RAM. With everyone fighting with GE drivers atm I'll bet the ultra will give faster lockups or perhaps the BSD at a superior FPS.

Its not worth it, you're just paying for an overclocked version of a GTS. People just want it for bragging purposes and nothing else.

Guys if you've got the money & play a lot of Q3 then go for it. Everyone knows that the standard Q3 benchmarks tossed around on the web dont really represent what happens in Real Life. Example, I have a Geforce DDR and achieve all the same results as the various webbies in Q3, ie 60 fps approx @ 1024x768, 32 bit, all options on. However, load up a large map in RA3 and get into a large firefight with 4-6 peeps at once firing roxx every which way and the thing slows down a lot unless you tone down the settings. I think as a general rule, its worth changing to every second generation of vid card. Eg for me, the move up to GF2 wasnt really worth it, but GFU would be a big step. Likewise if you've got a GF2 already then GFU might not be so big a jump.

ATM though, its still too pricy but I personally hope that when the NV20 comes out that the price of the GFU's will fall to a more affordable level and then I will dive in :).

Wij you say you've seen them in an EB store in the UK?

I really want to buy it from a store rather than mail order so it doesn't get a bouncing in the post :)

I'm really hoping they will appear in stores before Christmas.

Dabs is http://www.dabs.com an online store for PC stuff.

My local EB (Electronics Boutique) has them in but like I said, they cost more.

BTW - I didn't buy mine for bragging rights, I just realised that my GeForce1 SDR didn't really cut it no more so I thought I'd buy me an upgrade that might last a while...

Ok looking at these mail order sites I see that the GF2 Ultra is in very short supply. Also high street retailers are not even advertising them yet. My guess is that it hasn't 'officially' been released in the uk.

In the states the different GF2's are being advertised everywhere so why the delay here?

Well I've seen them in shops here (the creative one) in Dublin, and we never get things b4 the UK. Its going for Iep£469 (Stg£357) so its definitely "officially" released. I think they did say though that because this was a specialist card for only hardcore gamers (not everyone will pay £400+ for a vid card - you can get budget systems for as much!!!) that there would only be small numbers released.

I *was* planning on upgrading my GFX card. However I went to i6 which gave me 2 reasons not to.

1) I spent most of my upgrade budget on beer.
2) During extensive games of RA3 (no bugger was playing RA2 :| ) I found that my ancient old Rage Fury was giving me more than playable enough framerates. Whats more, the frame rates were more constant than the Geforce boys round me (no they werent stuck at 15fps all game :p), and it only ran into trouble when three of my team decided to (quite uncharitably I thought) die in front of me, the three plumes of blood brought my machine to its knees.

So I've decided to wait til next year, get me Radeon DDR, stick a P3 1Ghz in, then wait until I can afford P4 :D
