.. I don't

3 guys go to a hotel and ask for a room. The owner says a room is £30.

the 3 men split the money, £10 each.

After getting to the room the owner realises that the room is only 25 so gives the £5 change to the bell boy to take back.

On the way the bell boy takes £2 and gives the men £3 back.

Which means after splitting the £3 change amongst them they end up paying £9 each for the room.

9x3= 27 plus the £2 the kid took = 29. Where did the other pound go??

they dont pay 9 quid each in the way you put it. they give a tenner and then get a pound back.

You work it out wrong, the room is £25 there isn't £1 missing, they pay £25 and on they way the bell boy takes £2 which makes it £27 then £1 in each of the mens pockets = £30

In other words, the men don't pay £9 each for the room they pay less but get the change back as if they paid £9

Ok then how about :-

3 guys go to a hotel and ask for a room. The owner says a room is £30.

the 3 men split the money, £10 each.

After getting to the room the owner realises that the room is only 25 so gives the £5 change to the bell boy to take back.

On the way the bell boy takes £2 and gives the men £3 back.

The men split the £3 equaly taking £1 each, therefor they have payed £9 each

3 x £9 = £27 (£25 for the room, £2 for the tip)

------

The statement you had at the bottom is flawed, the tip was included in the amount the men payed, the only thing you can add to the other side of the equasion is the £1 each they had returned. £27 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 30 ( not £27 + £2 tip)

When my boss asked me during my intervieuw how much 2+2 is: I stood up, closed the door, checked the windows, turned of the phone, dimmed the lights and whispered in his ear: "How much would you like it to be?"

I got the job...

About as authentic as the "proof" most people base their DAoC whines on.

It's been said before that you're just calculating it wrong, but maybe it's a bit clearer when put into a formula :).

The second price (SP) is the first price (FP) - return (R) - the "tip" (T)
SP = FP - R + T
27 = 30 - 5 + 2

Now you're calculating the effective price + the "tip". This means
SP + T = FP - R + 2T
27 + 2 = 30 - 5 + 4

This doesn't equal the first price, but as you can see this isn't all that surprising, taking the formula into account. The 1 "lost" pound is lost because 25/3 = 8.33. The bell boy keeps 0.66*3, which leaves that 0.33*3. You can do this with several numbers and the ammount of "lost" pounds will always be the number after the comma (from the SP/people paying) * the number of people paying. At least this was the case with a few numbers I tested :).

The hobo who was taking a leak in the doorway nicked it and went of to McDonalds for a 99p cheeseburger, he then went to the newsagents and brought a fruit salad 1pchew!

failing that, the butler did it.

Simple answer. They didn't pay £27, they paid £25 but only got £3 change. Thieving chav of a bellboy nicked the other £2.

Edit: Or rather, they paid £30, were charged £25, and only got £3 change.

Maybe it's just me but surely the question shouldn't be how much did they pay / where did the money go...

£30 for a room... Now that's either a real dive or they've paid for the room by the hour. Either way, it seems like a seedy place to be...

So why would 3 men rent a £30 room in a seedy hotel???

Sounds like dodgy goings on to me. Quick, someone tell their wives!!!
