I need to upgrade my son's Android version. He has my old Galaxy Note 9, and because Samsung stopped supporting it at Android 10, it won't connect to his new Galaxy Smartwatch his Nan bought him, which needs Android 13. I've found a custom ROM that will upgrade the phone (and the buglist doesn't have anything he'll need or use) but I'm really twitchy about doing it as I've got no experience at all of Android dev modes, and there seems to be a ton of stuff to do before I even get to the ROM itself.

Anyone know of anyone who'll do it for me (for a fee) or be available for support? I've read a bunch of sites and watched youtube vids but I'm still pretty dubious about it all.

I know it's not what you're asking Gaff, but which watch is it because Samsung's site says it should support Android 10 for the 6?

It's not a 6, it's the brand new ME version (he's only 12, a 6 would be falling off him).

Biggest issue with a Samsung from memory will be which chip is in the device.

I'm pretty sure you'd be able to flash it yourself, just remember it will wipe out everything currently on it.

You used to be able to use ODIN (iirc) to reinstall official software if things go wrong, not sure if that's still the case.

I'd say go for it and pay someone if it goes sideways and you can't restore it.

Back when I used to do this kinda thing it was pretty chill, just install a custom bootloader , then boot into the bootloader and flash the new android version.
Not sure if it's any different these days but people rarely ran into issues, normally you have a backup bootloader incase of a failure there anyway.

The reason I don't bother these days is really it trips the security around nfc payments and disables it.

Like ECA in the distant past I've used them, I think it was with my early HTC phones but now I just stick to Nexus then Pixel phones to get an unadulterated android thus haven't need to use them for decades.

Iirc I did it exactly once. Plug in the phone, do the software thing, pray it doesn't brick. I have two friends who swear by the less obnoxiously tracker oriented ROM's. I cba really but also I have never been in a situation where I had to like you are. best of luck!
