Anyone having nightmare lag on the FH server lately?

Its been pretty much unplayable for me over the last couple of days, my ping goes from 10 to 500 and back again at random. I did a traceroute and found it was taking 14(!) hops between me and the server:

Tracing route to ded51.multiplay.co.uk [85.236.100.29]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

I'm guessing it's something going on at BT (my ISP), but not entirely. Don't know what I can do about it because of cause all the ranked servers in the UK are Multiplay :(

You do seem to being more hops compared to me, although I'm with BY. I did suffer it for a while a few weeks ago but it went after one evening, now I only suffer annoying loading lag issues.

He SEEMS to have more hops then you?

Dagaffer, you know if BT are doing any maintenance or anything to your connection? Changes or anything. If it's only been happening for a few days.

Get onto them and ask em about it. *Normally* they can be quite good at sorting these sort of problems out.

Meh, "more hops" in and of itself is nothing to worry about.

High latency or packet loss is. Demonstrate that first before complaining.

Note that even with all those hops you're still hovering around 10-13ms along the entire path past the DSL. Hardly any additional delay at all due to 'all those hops'.

I'd agree, but as I said in the rest of the post, my ping is spiking up to 500+ and then dropping down again. Every additional hop is an opportunity for a problem, and it doesn't seem to be a problem at Multiplay (because people on other ISPs don't seem to be experiencing it). Also, when I first started using the FH server I did some traceroutes back then and I was getting about 6 hops. I'm not sure how I measure packet loss (I used to have Data to do that for me :))

Which ping? ICMP/UDP 'ping', or the ingame shown one?

If the latter then a myriad of factors on your own machine can affect it, plus things server-side.

Got end-stats of a continuous ICMP ping whilst playing?

err me too. sometimes so bad that I have to dc as it's unplayable, though the in-game "ping"claims it's a nice 21

good idea on the continuous ping while plaing Ath, I'll give that a go tomorrow.

I belive this occurs when the server itself is suffering from its memory leak.

When the server hits about 270mb of used space its auto retsrated, but between about 250 and when it "crashes" things seem to go a little flaky.

Unfortunatly the memory leak bug has yet too be finsihed...so i'm restarting the servers whenever they are empty to reset the memory usage.

Is my trace, pipex have a direct peer with multiplay it seems :)

The memory leak is most pronouced of the 64 man servers...thus I am considering turning one of the 64 into two 32 player servers.

Leaving us with 1x64 [Prolly #2 as its more popular] and 2x32 running the same rotation as #1.

Sounds good. I actually prefer the 32 player maps a lot of the time.

actually I think that's pretty cool. 2x32 an 1x64 that is. I'd really like to see a small map server running too, but that's cos I like the action that the 16p servers deliver. you couls start a poll I suppose, and ask the people here what they'd most like.

back to the nightmare lag.... for me it still persists, most noticiably in the first 10 or 15 seconds of a map starting. I'm basically helpless and just have to wait it out, as the slightest touch of the mouse/kbd will have me juddering wildly into walls and whatnot.

I'm slightly inclined to believe that this is a server issue, as I don't get it, or only very slightly on EA servers in euroland. The server also claimed there was a prob with my connection and dropped me a couple of times. When it's not doing that it's great, stable 20~30 pings and whatall :)

Ah ok..not its not server issue.

How much ram you got? i'm guessing a gig?

When i had a gig of ram fro the first 30 seconds i'd have very low FPS and my HDD was chattering away, after 30 secs...was fine and game ran sweet as.

When i upgraded too two gig of ram this inital stuttering disappeared.

Aparently its down too the swap file usage in windows..lemme grab a link too a possible fix for you.

hehe cheers matey :) I already did the DEP thing yesterday. It helps inasmuch as I seem to notice that I'm "in" the server much quicker. the lag is a bitch though. I'll try the conservative swapping thing as well.

well done on the gig guess, I indeed have "just" a gig. perhaps I'll get another this coming weekend. first I'll see what the swap thing does though, cos I'm skint :)

my god, the "lag" is horrible! I notice my hdd led goes on and stays on. I waited at least 5 minutes on a euro server for it to go away and it didn't. the lag has cost me at least 10 deaths today AND ITS BLOODY DAMN FRUSTRATING!!!!

I'm no longer convinced it's the network, but something running in my doze, as I've a gig of ram and done all the bf2 tweaks there are. if I alt-tab out of bf2 there's still ram free fgs so either (duh) windows is being a pile o' shite(tm) or there's something nasteh running that craps up my poota :/

off I go to check :/

MUCH better. I even had steam running when I tested it on FH1 just now and all was cool (people yelled at me as I'd accidentally turned off my mic, and I sucked more than usual, but that's ok, my lag is gone!) :)

you have no idea how much that was pissing me off. I'm sooooo glad now :)

thing is, if I suck now I can't blame it on lag :/

Right I've been warming up and will not be hitting the FreddysHouse BF2 servers over the weekend :)

I've got 512RAM and although the first 2 seconds im lagged to hell on joining a server, the rest of the time Im fine. Only tried 32 player servers though, 64 will probably require at least a gig of ram? :(

Watch out for [FH]SAS :D

you tried the tweaks in the posts above mate? this and this, though the latter may not be nice if you've "only" got 512mb :)

personally I'm getting my second gig this weekend, as I really love BF2 and freak out when things don't go well (caused by other factors than my own personal suckiness you see). tbh your claim of only a couple of seconds lag before things stabilize is more or less ideal/on par. no worries there. in my case it was an external program messing with me: I was having minutes worth of extreme lag. it's all solved now though :)
