I wanted to heat some new (pre-boiled) potatoes in the m/w oven. Placed in glass bowl in a little water. Covered with cling-film. Hi power. 5 mins. The potatoes exploded shattering the bowl and it blew the m/w door off covering the kitchen and my 5 flatmates in mashed potato !

But a fast way to make mashed potatoes.
By the sounds of things you have to either eat it all off of flat mates, or scrape it from the kitchen. Much more time saving to mash the potatoes :p

Never done it myself, but seen it done a fair few times on Brainiac, not normally with potatoes though. Usually they rely on putting in liquid nitrogen or something like that.

i seen the liquid nitrogen one. for anyone who doesnt know, when it turns into a gas form then its volume changes dramatically. doing it quickly only makes it worse :p

I broke our first one by putting in a baked potato wrapped in tin foil, the microwave went rather cold and quiet.

And more recently I left it on for a bit with nothing inside, seems to still work though so fingers crossed.

I have blown up (in a hypobaric chamber - recuced atmospheres):

a) A coke bottle
b) A cake
c) A green inflatable frog

Was for some TV science programme a few years ago :p

i recommend you putting a cd in a microwave makes the kewlest effects ever. Ofc do it round someone else's house so you don't break your own microwave.

Heh. CD in the microwave. Another thing from the Brainiac office there. I really liked when they put in the Christmas fairy lights once. That was kinda neat.

I still think Dr. Bunhead is often the best part of that series. That and Mythbusters are the only reason I really watch T.V. now.

Thermite in a microwave? That sounds like something the boys would love to try out. I wonder if it would actually get enough to start the reaction though? If it would I think it would melt the whole microwave.

How about bubble bath in a microwave ? OR would it just boil away without bubbling ?

Went to orlando on holiday once, rented a house with some mates - found a cockroach one day, so trapped it with a plate+glass and chucked it in the microwave on full power - it lasted a full 1m12s before it stopped moving.
