I've booked a surprise long weekend for me and the missus in October, but I actually know very little about the place. Anyone got any "must-sees" (or dos) they can recommend?
Me, the missus and our friends tend to go to a european city each year for a week. Out of all the ones I went to, I loved Budapest the most.
As someone has said, go to the baths. I cant remember which one we went to, but it was just over one of the bridges. It was a bit surreal because they treat people with spinal injuries there so there were loads of people in a small pool in traction. The massages there are mint too, especially if you get one of the hot masseurs.
There are lots of sights too see and if you go to the castle grounds, at the top of the lift that someone has alluded to, you will see some bloke called Steven, with scruffy blonde hair offering to give you a tour. I would fully recommend using him as he is awesome and will answer any questions you have.
Food and drink wise, I have to reccomend a place called "Fatals". Its near the market and the pedestrianised bit, a tram journey away from the city centre. Sorry I cant be more specific to its location but the food was great, portions were huge and the price was cheap.
If you want cheap drinks, then just go down one of the streets off the main bits. We found this place and it was like walking into a star wars bar, but for 3 pints of local lager (which was absolutely beautiful) and 3 double vodka and cokes, it came to just short of £3. Although the locals looked really scary and intimidating, once we got chating to them they were all lovely. Certainly much more friendly than the locals in Prague, Krakow and Bucherest.
One day, we got on a tram and just stayed on it right until the end of the line. It took us to what can only be desribed as a shanty town, with families and their babies, just sat around begging. Not sure we should have done this, but it was an experience and certainly opened our eyes to the city.
Also, dont be alarmed if you see police walking round with assualt rifles or sub machine guns. They have had a lot of problems recently with attacks on the parliment buildings. Not terrorism, just locals upset with the way the country is run. But you will be safe.
Personally, I cant reccomend it enough and I am sure to go again. My mate ended up going back by himself to get his teeth done, you know, vaneers or whatever they call them and he saved £5k by getting it done there and the standard of dentristy is actually on a par if not better than the UK
