Question Anyone been through an employment tribunal?

As it says in the title really, anyone got any experience of an employment tribunal?

Looks like I may be facing one soon enough - my company's trying to make me redundant while on maternity leave, even though the (informal) replacement isn't being made redundant.

Tis very complicated, but still sucks mightily!

If you have been through one, what was it like? Did you go back to your workplace after? What was the settlement like?

I used to work in the employment law team at Hampshire County Council and have sat through many.

They're massively boring, you don't need to turn up as you're lawyer will do everything for you, but it will help your case if you do so they can question you on your witness statement.

Do you know how many days it's been scheduled for? They take biggest part of the day 9am - 5pm with an hour for lunch, but some can roll on for days.

Yep, whole process takes 6-7 months maximum, and it's a consonant vowel consonant consonant of a process. Nice that it becomes you that is under scrutiny for every little thing you did in the duration of your contract. It almost feels like it is you that is on trial when it should be the employer. But rules are rules, the pay out often sucks too. My advice, try find another job as soon as possible to avoid a long drawn out and very stressful time if you are able to, my experience was that it was hell

Any company trying to make someone redundant while on maternity is taking a massive gamble, especially if they are keeping your so called replacement on. You will win.

I sacked some in 2003 & they took it to ACAS first.

We didnt get a lawyer, which scared the hell out of the other side. They must of thought either extreme confidence or arrogance. We won. Just investigate all your angles first, which im sure you will
