Anyone at Bath Uni?

if so, can you answer me a few questions?

I was at the Computer Science dpt. Open Day on Friday and we got the tour and shown the network and the rather shocking sight of a university running a Win 98 network where many others are considering updating to XP from 2000...

Erm, is this really wise? The fact that UNIX runs only from the PC as a terminal, as does "trialing" Win 2000???

It was very bizarre and kinda put me off that the Uni werent running up to date (and more stable) systems when we are dealing with uni coursework etc.

Was at UMIST and Loughborough this week as well and both had very impressive facilities.

Comments welcome. My Bath offer should arrive next week btw.

Thats quite scary, I was at Bath Uni yesterday for the same open day. Dam the open day dragged big style. I wasn't too impressed with the Uni myself, although Bath (the town) was quite nice.

I have visited my friend at Bath uni - no net connection to his halls, very strange

Only half the halls at Bath Uni are connected to their network which is rather annoying. Especially for those studying computer related courses.

I'd still rather have Win98 than NT though, which my college uses. Admin really abuse their power with it =/

We had NT until last year, they upgraded to 2k. Except they didn't upgrade the hardware at all so where NT was quite happy on the systems, 2k chugs a bit. :(

dunno what the win OS we have on our systems, i just stick to the (slow) unix machines

Very few Unis tend to run the latest OS, in fact quite a few run a mixture with old os and computers etc.

In fact if you look at unis they're a fairly good example of how not to do it ;)

you have a point. Though Bath seemed to have a truely odd system. (Unix and 2k running central, 400 people logging into the same box sort of jobby).

mrMen, to try and narrow this down. I was in "group 5" and look like this. Ring any bells?

My mate is studying at UMISt, I'm at Salford.

UMIST is probably the best university in Europe for studying Computer Science, i seriously advise you go there ! Plus Manchester night life is the best in the country

4 Universities in one city :D

Indeed, UMIST is my front runner at the moment.

as well as Bath I also applied to:
UMIST. (w00t).
Loughborough - (likely to be my insurance choice)
Nottingham (off to see them on Wednesday)
Leeds (asked them about open day dates and they never replied)
Manchester (want an A in maths.. hahahaha)

UMIST had upto date systems when i was there - (although that was DOS 6.20 and pegasus mail back then!)

Ugh, my uni uses Pegasus mail and this fucking terrible excuse for a program called Select SSADM (i think) that's used to construct data flow diagrams etc... :(

Well your pics still aren't working. I'll go around asking everyone if their name is shovel. I may get some strange responses on the way around, but it'll work.

they seem to be... grrr. if I remember I'll put them on NTL webspace instead. alternatively go to Students Social (link below), hit profiles, and click on "Ben"... there are plenty of other stupid ones too lying about...

Nice pic :)

As a forest fan myself, I share your passion for hating anyone that beats the mighty reds. One of the plus points about going to Nottingham Uni. Living near Brighton I don't get to see them much.
