Anyone do a bit of light tethering when out and about or if their BB is down ?

Has your carrier ever whinged and which one was it ?

Would like to occasionally use mine as a hotspot for 10 mins at in-laws but don't want to pay extra for the privilege since I won't get anywhere near a 1gig allowance anyway.

Have you looked at GiffGaff Wij? they have unlimited net. My work net went down for a week while we changed provider, I used my phone as a hot spot for the pc's in the office, worked great.

texts and data that lasts for a month.

* £5 goodybag - unlimited texts for a month

* £10 goodybag - 250 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited mobile Internet for a month

* £15 goodybag - 400 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited mobile Internet for a month

* £20 goodybag - 600 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited mobile Internet for a month

I was hoping to go with 3 (yeh, dodgy I know) because I can get £48 Quidco on the 12 month, 300 mins, 1GB, £10 plan. Seemed like a good enough deal since the wife is on 3 and I assumed I'd get loads of free 3 to 3 minutes. Effectively £6 a month for it.

Their site though seems to have removed all reference to 3to3 minutes. Probably not a good deal then if they've removed it :/

Might look at Giffgaff but the wife has a smidge over a year left on her contract so the 3 deal would have been much better for me really if it was what I thought it was.

/edit: bah

I'm on the one plan with 3, and they claim that they aren't going to go after people who tether their phones on it. They say they'll just shape excessive usage.

We'll see.

One plan is vastly expensive and doesn't have 'no tethering' in T&Cs. Was just wondering if anyone ever got caught doing the odd cheeky tether on a normal contract.

I tethered for a while on o2 when I was on them, they didn't say anything about it, however this was around 6-12 months ago and the networks have got a lot more savvy to tethering since then.

giffgaff T&C's state that they do not allow tethering but unofficially on the forums they've also stated they won't go after people who only do it know and then and only small usage so you should be fine :)

I'm on Vodafone SIM-only and I've tethered quite a few times, even once going over my monthly allowance. They don't seem to care one bit, in fact they haven't ever charged me for exceeding my 500MB limit.

I use an app called "3G Watchdog" to monitor my data use.

yet they've put up info on their website stating that they don't care if you tether.

I'm on one plan and I do tether quite regularly at work. I've never had any problems, I also stream a lot during the day.

Well last week while in Birmingham, the Holiday Inn I was staying at tried to charge 15 quid a day for internet. Fuck off thinks I, so I tethered using my O2 'unlimited' net contract. So far I've not had any complaints, hopefully it'll stay that way. I think over the two days I used roughly 15mbs.

I've tethered my ms air through my iPhone few times on my Vodaphone contract. I didn't even think there was an issue doing this.
