Any Jazz fans?

I'm looking for some new music to listen to and i generally find ambient stuff helps me work better than Gamah's recommended 'bangin ch00nz' D love you really).

Would anyone be able to recommend a particular artist or compilation?.

My knowledge isn't too hot on jazz but what i'm looking for roughly is the stuff without a vocalist, any sort of pace, and as said fairly ambient.

the only jazz artist in particular i ever got into was miles davis. not really ambient, but instrumental and brilliantly put together, one of the all-time great muscians.

in terms of actual ambient/minimal music you could try:

phillip glass
kronos quartet
steve reich
do, make, say, think
tarantel
black dice
battles
the wind up bird
unwed sailor
rachel's (not to be confused with the french band rachels)
six organs of admittance
p.g. six
the album leaf
angels of light (has vocals, though)
cerberus shoal (only the later stuff, the first album is pretty different... good, but not what you're looking for at all)
current 93
dirty three
madlib - shades of blues

as i said, not jazz at all, but in terms of the sort of stuff you say you're after... i think all the above are suitable.

deffinitely true. we have a great jazz band come in every sunday to the bar i work in. i went to a jazz club a couple of times in the past too, and it's deffinitely the best atmosphere to absorb this kind of music, i think.

still, the same could be said about all live music - hearing it in it's raw form is undoubtedly the purest and best way to appreciate it. there's still a lot to be had with 'home' listening too.

jazz scene is kinda big (and old) so will just look like silly long list if only even the major names were mentioned.

some openings would be to pick some names wich play on an instrument you like , or go for a particular period or style wich you favour.

jazz maybe got more schools than any other genre , maybe so many that jazz isnt a genre but rather a mindset

now with that said you cant go wrong on anything including mclaughlin , sublime technique and perfect hair

Superb album and great recommendation.

If you wanna try Jazz trumpet can't go wrong with Miles Davis, the man was a god. Even the later funkier stuff was pretty good on albums like Tutu. Try 'Sketches of Spain' imo it's a masterpiece.

the verve remixed have some nice compliations of remixed jazz classics (and the more not so classical) - the verve is a record company who published alot of great jazz artists.

I occasionally listen to Jazz, but its not something I'm particularly into. I like that smooth, lazy, smoke-filled, blue-lit, back room type Jazz. Real easy going stuff. None of that trumpets on acid crazy shit.

The only other Jazz is that nasty Yves St. Laurent perfume that people wore in the 80's. I think you can still get it. Smells like a musk-rat's pussy.
