There are also Warr Guitars which are very similar. Essentially mountain dulcimers with guitar tunings and frets as far as I can see.Svartmetall said:The Chapman Stick has been around for about 30 years, still a fairly rare sighting, but is the first instrument designed purely to be played by using both hands tapping. There some incredible Stick players out there...here's a few snippets...
Irene Orleansky
Pascal Glanville
Worth hunting around...tried a Stick once in Martin Petersen's bass workshop in London; it felt very weird, but interesting. They come in bass and treble versions, from 10 to (I think) 14 strings, and are generally fairly mad.

The frets are 'fanned' like that because the scale length for the bottom string is longer than that for the top string, to allow for getting lower notes while still maintaining proper string tension - so the strings aren't so loose they just flap about or go sharp when you tap the string.Sharma said:The thing I find strange about them is the fact that the frets seem to steep across.

You can see how hard it is from the faces he's pulling...though admittedly, Fulara is a bit of a gurner at the best of times...Lamp said:This is my favourite fulara: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTD2mwwlPqc
Yes, there is - all the harp bits are tuned to sympathetically resonate with what's being played - sitars and Hardanger fiddles have used that idea for centuries. Plus you can pluck the open strings, as in the Michael Hedges vids above.Sharma said:I wanna know what the hell it is, wanna hear what it's like.
/Edit:
There is no point in that last guitar Svart.
Hmm..he's obviously a competent player, although to be honest I'm not hearing anything especially...er...special there.Lamp said:
