Anyone been to Thailand or Dubai?

Hi all,

I'm on the verge of spanking my moohlah on a holiday to Thailand (with a 3 night stay in Dubai), has anyone else been?

We're thinking of staying at the One-and-Only Mirage Palace in Dubai for 3 nights, and then off to the Evason Hideaway in Koh Samui for 10 days.

Anyone got any tips?

My fianceé stayed in Dubai for 2 weeks (she works for Emirates, it was part of their "training") and loved it. Nice bars, interesting food. She recommends going on a desert safari - leaping over sand dunes in jeeps is always fun :) If you want some English company when you're over there then there's a bar just opposite the Emirate's training centre with English staff.

You will get slapped for bumping threads, especially when you only posted an hour and a half a go.

Anyway, my gf is not long back from Thailand and she said it's the best holiday she has every been on. It's fairly expensive to get there, but once you are there it's all cheapness.

Dubai. Well. I doubt I'd be going near there under the current climate.

Even more remarkable is that Leggy's girlfriend was leggy's boyfriend before he/she went.

Whilst the Evason resort looks very nice, it seems overly expensive. I take it you are going in the dry season (after October)???

Check out this site for alternative resorts. Best bit about Thailand is leaving your comfy hotel and meeting the locals.

As Leggy mentioned, it is cheap but get your battering skills ready :)

I haven't been to Thailand in years, but when I was there, I found it to be one of the friendliest places on earth. The people you meet are very polite in most cases.

I would suggest that you avoid buying anything from the street vendors there, food-wise - unless you want to spend most of your time there on the lav. Especially avoid the deep-fried grasshoppers.

I went on a hill trek up north of Chiang Mai when I was there, and the poverty in the outer regions of the country was quite shocking. These are the source of the "import brides" you hear about - people selling their children so that they can survive another year. Not to mention the opium. Our trek guide would, every night we were out, break out his pipe and get whacked as soon as we had settled in our shelter for the night.

I think I went to Koh Samui when I was down in Phuket - probably one of the best beaches I've ever seen. I didn't stay there long, I only went for the coral snorkelling.

To sum up: Thailand is a great place to go on holiday, just check your luggage when you're in the airport on the way back...

Speaking of food, make sure you take the pooh tube out of any fresh prawns you eat.

I was there a few years back.
Visited Bangkok,Koh Samui,Phuket,Chiang Mai,Koh Samui,Phitsanuloke,...

Most of what Breni says is true... except for the fried grasshoppers.
They were really tasty ;)

I went to Thailand about 8 years ago, it was the best holiday ever. My cousin lives/works in Bangkok so he put us up and sent us to all the cool places.

We went up to the north (The Golden Triangle, Chiang Mai etc) for 4 days and stayed in a hut in a tribal village for a night (that was v fun).

For the second half we went down to the south (Phuket) and stayed on a Junk for 2 days. Our hotel in Phuket consisted of huts on stilts on the beachfront (literally 10 feet from the beach) and the sunset views were absolutely beautiful. Visited James Bond Island (from The Man With The Golden Gun) then back to Bangkok where we stayed for a couple of days before heading back to Heathrow. I think we were out there for 18 days in total.

Very recommended for a holiday destination.

A woman who sits next to me in work has been - and she's going again this year (she also mentioned some hotel which is the only 6-star hotel on the planet - or something).

She mentioned an incident when they wandered into a "stricter" district (ie not a tourist part) wearing their beach-wear, and they were furnished with blazened looks from the locals (major insult apparently).

I think Dubai was in the news late last year for the sheer volume of construction work going on at the moment. The entire water-front (Dubai City?) was like a building site (2 dozen huge skyscrapers being built simultaneously).

A mate of mine's dad used to work in Oman, which entailed yearly family holidays over there and he says Dubai looks good. He also said he was the only white guy flying over there on the build up to the Afgan & Iraq War ptII...

Been to Dubai for 2 weeks, its VERY nice if you like sand.

Otherwise it kinda sucks and they don't seem to like white people

The Burj Al Arab? A friend of mine says he's stayed there a couple of times, looks swish.

Yeah looks like the one. I particularly remember hearing about the:

He's there to load the playstation games.

The Burj Al Arab is the only 7 star hotel in the world. And extremely posh. My fianceé stayed in a 5 star hotel nearby (called the "World Trade Centre Hotel").
