Antibacterial Soap vs Swine Flu

This is a kind of a rant of sorts just cos I don't really enjoy work...

Due to the Swine Flu Virus going around our office has decided to put antibacterial soap in all our bathrooms...

I found this a bit odd since Swine flu isnt a bacteria its a virus. So I wondered to myself if this would make any difference at all!

After doing several google searches I have found this as a common thread:

Antibacterial soaps don't kill viruses

Washing your hands frequently with regular soap and water is important to help prevent the spread of germs. But while antibacterial products may seem like a stronger cleaning option, they are no more effective in cleaning your hands than regular soap and water--and they do not kill viruses like H1N1 (swine) flu. In fact, the routine use of antibacterial cleaning products has been seriously questioned by scientists and studies have shown that triclosan, the active ingredient in many antibacterial products, may make matters worse by creating harmful drug-resistant bacteria.

Stick with simple soap and water and if you can't wash your hands, use an alcohol-based sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol content.

And that's just confirms what I thought! So I'am going to avoid using this stupid antibacterial crap and use the normal soap...

Crazy work fools...

Spit on the bosses sandwiches if you have a cold. That'll learn 'em.

And wank on the bogroll in the bogs then roll it back into the roll if you have AIDS.

It won't kill viruses, however one of the problems is the complications that can arise due to the virus and having infections can make people more prone to the virus.

So though its not directly beneficial, it can help.

the people who normally hand out the free magazines outside the tratin station in leeds were handing out free packets of Kleenex today, i got a balsam one and an antiviral one, plus some thing about swine flue from the DHSSPS (HAD TO LOOK THAT UP) department of heath, social services and public safety apparently

thing that bothers me if that some people cant even cough into their hands, seesm like some sort of badge of homur coughing and sneezing over as wider area as possible

i think the effect of the water has something to do with "killing" the virus. not any soap of antibacterial soap.

i remember reading years ago you had to have your hands under the water for like 20 seconds or more for it to be effective against whatever but i could be mistaken.

I'm more worried about the twats who don't wash their hands after going to the toilet.

Like the bloke I saw in the library today who came straight from having a dump and just walked out of the door. Filthy fucking idiot.

All soap is an effective at removing bacteria but they put extra anti-bac agents in the special soaps - only thing is you need to leave the soap on for a few minutes for it to be effective and pretty much noone does this :p

Theres also the arguement that anti-bacterial agents wipe out the normal bacteria we all carry leaving us more open to the nasty ones...

Its pretty much a scam to charge more for soap really.

Is rather pointless...not least because people actually have to wash em in the first place.

Its a small company. The toilets are clean and we have tissue paper towels to dry your hands so yes it would be a lot more sanitary than spreading piss and poo everywhere...

I might actually have had swine flu. Heh. It was alright, actually. As flu's go, anyway.

I did an event at a school that chose not to quarantine - it had siblings at Alleyns school, and some of the kids were on Tamiflu, and was only 500m down the road from another school that has confirmed cases. Got sick two days after, phoned the NHS who wanted me to get tested, but the GP refused because policy is only to test people who have been to the US, Mexico, or spent over an hours close contact with someone who is a confirmed case.

I went for a meal with seven other people on Sat night after I got ill, feeling ropey. Infected seven other people. Pretty impressive hit rate.

Never know if I had it or not. Chances are not, but there is a small chance yes. I think it's pretty safe to say that the flu is just out and spreading freely now, and that because it's so mild you'll never know the true extent of how many people catch it.

By the way, before I seem like a super idiot who goes around coughing on people to plague them, I didn't phone the NHS till Sunday, after the meal, and I didn't realise that the school I was visiting chose not to quarantine, or that it was next to a school that did. When I realised, that was when I phoned the NHS helpline, not because I felt like I was dying but because I thought if there was even a remote chance I had it they may want to keep tabs on where it goes.

The doctor told me to just "carry on doing what I normally do". I was supposed to be doing a school event in Dover on Monday, but I cancelled.
