Looking to buy some good AV software

Heard BitDefender is supposed to be good, and Emnisoft's A-Squared is also good

Anyone got recommendations ?

Not interested in Norton or any resource-hogging programs

Cheers

Buy?

If you must, I've heard NOD32 is very good and very light on resources.

Try Microsoft Sercurity Essentials seems decent runs well and is free.

AVG free? So long as you're behind a good firewall and don't go to silly sites isn't AVG still alright?

Avast is very good, Nod32 is solid as well. Kaspersky is horrible crap though, the amount of false positives is a complete joke.

I like Kaspersky, but it tends to be a bit over-sensitive.

As Nath said, pay for? why? I have only ever used the free ones, I don't have virus's.

Avast or AVG free editions are fine, and do not hog any resources.

It makes me laugh the way security programs are sold these days, how they are designed to lock you out of your own PC and scan every bloody thing you do. Common sense > paid for security software.

Another vote here for Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and has done pretty well in recent tests alongside other virus software (shocking, I know!)

I would go with this as well!

Failing that Avira is pretty good as well

Also MSSE here. Quite fond of Avast! also, and also have a copy of Kaspersky 2010for a year for nothing, but prefer the former two.

Ditto, running it on two PCs now and it's fine, costs nothing and so far is faster than AVG which is speeding down the "bloat" route.

Oh, if you must have something "paid for" check with your bank, loads of them give away AV subscriptions these days.

avast is good, albeit a bit annoying for the standard user, with its notifications and shit.

AVG, as Mystic G said, has become a resource hog, and nod32 is the queen of false positives, due to its badly conceived heuristic. Not that the detection rate is not good, I wouldn't know - didn't keep it around much.
