Ok, following on from the debate I had a couple of weeks ago in the pub with a mate about how long it would take to view every face on earth we started discussing more crap last night. We were talking about Ronaldo's transfer to Real Madrid and he was convinced that if the £80 million transfer fee was converted into pound coins it would fill the entire Old Trafford stadium. I was skeptical, infact more than skeptical but to be honest I am not great at working out things like this so I couldn't give him a coherant reason as to why I thought he was wrong.

So, help me figure this one out, even if just means devising a formula. Thanks :D

Easy one this time.

Find out the volume of a pound coin, multiply it by 80million. find out the volume of the stadium.

compare the numbers.

amirite?

1252.5 cubic millimetres * 80 mil = 100200000000 cubic milimeters

IMO, no wouldnt fill it.

Slight error in your math. You can't stack coins perfectly, there will always be some space left inbetween them, so you will have unused "volume"/space.

Make sure Ronaldo's in there so he gets crushed to death by his own price.

bag of £500 poundcoins is about half the size of a football

so 1k = 2 footballs
100k - 200
1 mill - 2000
80 mill - 160,000 footballs

seeing as OT is like 70k seater

i think u can get more than 2 balls to a seat

Fucking LOL. Gohans explanation is the best yet. Also I can back him on the rough size of a bag of £500 pound coins.

1 British pound:
Diameter = 22.50 mm
Thickness = 3.15 mm
Mass = 9.50g
(from: Wikipedia.org

One pound has a weight of 9.50g. This means that 80 million pounds has a weight of:
80 000 000 * 0.0095 [kg] = 760000 [kg] = 760 [ton].
A generic small forklift can carry about 2 metric tonnes, meaning it would need to make 380 rides to move the stack.

If you'd neatly stack all the coins ontop eachother you'd get a tower with a height of:
80 000 000 * 0.00315 [m] = 252 000 [m] = 252 [km].

To get a stack of acceptable height, say about a meter high orso, you'd need to stack the coins in 252 000 individual small stacks. If you place these small stacks in a perfect checkerboard grid (which isn't the most compact grid, a honeycomb grid would take up far less space) you'd end up with a box grid of 504 stacks wide and 500 stacks long (as 504 * 500 = 252 000). This would mean the size of the stack would be:

width: 504 * 0.0225 [m] = 11.34 [m]
length: 500 * 0.0225 [m] = 11.25 [m]

And the height was defined previously as 1 [m].

Yes it would fit. Easily.

By the way, I'm too lazy to calculate the honeycomb size stack.
