Yes, this is a music forum. Shut it.

After the past few threads, I think it'd be interesting if everyone posted the name(s) of some genre(s) and gave a readily-downloadable example song that really typifies that genre. (good songs where possible! :p)
I'll get the ball rolling...

Pop-metal (aka bad nu-metal): Papa Roach - Between Angels and Insects
(good) Nu-Metal: Spineshank - Negative Space
Rapcore: hed(p.e) - Killing Time
Goth metal: Deftones - Birthmark
Jazz metal: Hoobastank - Karma Patrol (or any any Incubus)
Tribal metal: Soulfly - Mulambo
Skate-Punk: Pennywise - Greed
Ska-Punk: Less than Jake - Johnny Quest Thinks We're Sellouts
Prog-Metal: Tool - Schism

Gifv more!

edit: was wandering down the backalleys of my music folder, and I came across..

God-awful Valkyrie metal: Luca Turilli - Black Dragon

I'd say Deftones belongs to the nu metal thingie.

Some good stuff:

Opeth - The Leper Affinity
Faith No More - Take This Bottle
Alice In Chains - Sludge Factory
Meshuggah - New Millenium Cyanide Christ
Lacuna Coil - Cold Heritage
Pantera - I'm Broken
Dark Funeral - Arrival Of Satan's Empire

Haven't said the genres I know,but d/l for yourselves and see :)

(Have to agree with ya on the classification thing Landshark, mostly I'd say there are 2 kinds of music:good and bad :p)

That particular Pantera song isn't bad, but then I listen to something like 'Walk' and just think... oh dear, what ARE you doing....

It's not my thing. The guitar is a little too random-wailing, the singing is just growling with stupid lyrics :p
Plus I don't like the intentional dischords that much :p

Not desperately easy to find but.... ooh! ooOooOOoh @ Face of Melinda and Drapery Falls. Also To Bid You Farewell seems nice but the one i d/l'd seems to cut off halfway through.
First impression is that it's like Cradle of Filth, mellowed a bit, and with their lead singer shot and replaced by someone who's not a 30-year-old career loser who can't sing.

Muse - Time is running out. (Don't know if it's DL'able... But from what I have heard this is their best song out to date.)

Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out). (It shouldn't matter if you like Radiohead or not this song is a classic.)

The Verve - Bittersweet Harmony. (Don't know where it fits, and I don't really know why I say this... Just another classic song for the archive I guess.)

Coldplay - Beautiful World. (Not like most of Coldplay's newer material... It is a very good song from their first album.)

Bloodhound Gang - The bad touch. (Heh... very catchy tune worth getting if you haven't heard it.)

Daft Punk - Around the world. (There are a few songs by this band that are worth listening to... This is just off of the top of my head.)

The Music - Getaway. (An aquired taste, but if you like this type of thing it's worth it.)

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Otherside. (Another classic. Fits in well with indy stuff.)

Linkin Park - Runaway. (Nu-Metal mixed with rap... One of their better songs.)

Idlewild - You held the world in your arms. (This band propably isn't as well known but they are good... Very catchy song.)

Hehe... I could add some other genres of music but I think I have given my fair share.

Thursday is not emo. I appreciate that as far as new bands go they may be fairly influenced by the style but they are just another alternative punk rock band in my opinion.

The term emo or emocore as the style was originally called is short for 'emotional hardcore'. Hardcore ethics are as such 'diy or die'. I fail to see how a major label band such as Thursday can therefore be called an emotional hardcore band.

If you like Thursday check out some 'real' emo, bands like:

indian summer, i hate myself, mohinder, page99, anasarca, honeywell, guyver-one, julia, moss icon, the hated, shotmaker, sleepytime trio, don martin 3, plunger, phillippé, amanda woodward, candyland carcrash, yaphet kotto, balboa, standstill, orchid, joshua fit for battle.

The list goes on, but that's a good representative of the different styles of emo. These bands were mostly around in the early 80s to the mid to late 90s. Most emo bands were together for no more than a few years and released records on small labels, played shows for next to nothing or free and never really made much money except perhaps enough to live off, and that was the successfull bands.

The use of the term 'emo' nowadays is mostly a bastardised version used to label any pop-punk or alt. punk rock bands who sing about girls and whine a lot. This is not what emo is/was about.

:)

Much as nu-metal is not necessarily about how one's cat died yesterday and how everybody hates you.
