Most of England's god awful movies usually get swept under the rug as opposed to the majority of Hollywood's junk which is rammed down our throats every summer.

I mean, ffs, I can't even eat a bowl of cornflakes without being reminded that I should be watching 'The Cat in the Fucking Hat'. ~rolls eyes~

0? If it wasn't for the fact that most americans are totally overcome with a patriotic fervour and a desire to see large explosions on the silver screen then hollywood probably wouldn't churn out crappy BS films like this; there wouldn't be any money in it for them.

last time i checked the US wasn't made up from a collective hive mind. doesnt sound to me like asha is going to see this flick so let's lay off the asha bashing for a sec, eh?

if it hadn't been for the brave american soldiers, sailors and pilots that helped tremendously by giving their lives for the war effort (especially during operation overlord) we'd all be typing in german. now, mind you, im not saying the british were sitting on their asses whilst sipping tea and having a wank. everyone did their part (even norway to some extent, gutta på skauen HOOAH :D).

so let's just all agree this movie is going to be complete bollocks and it ain't gonna change what really happened.

Ur...I'm not debating whether or not the Americans were a vital part in the war effort. The problem I have is when Hollywood takes a slice of history which is of great pride to the english (or whoever) and then distorts it for the benefit of that moronic segment of the american public that laps this shit up.

ok lets get this straight in the 1930's

england had an amicable arrangement with germany we werent friends but we werent enemies either, we warned them if they invaded poland there would be war they crossed the line and plunged us in to world war 2

unlike the war mongers the current administration in america seems to be we didnt want a war, WW1 was still fresh in the british mind and the public did not want to go to war i see nothing wrong with that, i wonder if we had started WW2 if history would have made us the bad guys speculation but interesting.
when push came to shove who stood up for what was right yeah we did the british AGAIN and dont forget this tiny little island had multiple coutries waging war on it because of forced conscription did u know the french actually surrended there entire navy to the germans didnt even try to fight the germans had the entire resources of europe at its command and it still could not bring us to our knees.

no one can deny the part america played in WW2 sure they played a big part in winning there side of it the pacific battles and a role in the european campaigns too but the fact remains THEY DID NOT WIN WW2 FOR US! it was a joint effort between the allies 3 major powers british russian american ok thats the last im gonna say about the history of WW2 as i know it im done with this thread

as for hollywood fuk em look at the response from 1 thread when this goes global and we start seeing trailers there will be a uproar i for one will not watch this movie

I'm telling you no american is going to lap this movie up. It will flop. Anyhow maybe they don't distort things, maybe they just tell a story of a guy who was there. Maybe they show some of how heroic the British fliers from this outsiders pov. Aw, who am I kidding. Tom Cruise saves the day !

Interesting and very Funny fact :)

in wwII the British sank more french ships than the Germans :)

------

No one denies that the Americans played a pivotal role in World War 2, people disagree with the shameless ego creating crap which some of the movies spew forth. u571 has been mentioned, lets not even dive into the farce which was Pearl Harbor.

People forget that the 2nd world war was enormous and also forget about the huge implications of war.

People neglect the appeasement between Germany and Britain/France - the facts that germany had been harshly dealt with after versailles - nobody in Britain/France wanted war and it was believed that Hitler and his friend Mussolini in Italy were also advocates of peace. The allies allowed Hitler some concessions such as anschluss with Austria and Czechoslovakia as well as the remilitarisation of the rheinland.

Britain did not "sit on its ass" - unlike America, France especially and most of europe was decimated by the First World War, you'll also know that most of Europe was forced to take out huge loans with America - the name of this escapes me at the moment - And you'll also know about America seizing british assests overseas such as companies in africa or the bahamas to pay for these debts - The fact was britain wa snot fully recovered from world war 1, the country as well as the decaying commonwealth needed time to recover and this was the main reason we had to allow hitler some gains.

We do however have to thank the USA for shipments of food and weaponry across the atlantic - as Britain would have succumb to Hitler if this had not occured (the U-boat blockades) - also note this was a major reason for the US entering the war.

Place yourself in churchills position. Your main ally France is swept away in a matter of days, its peopel forming a Vichy government and turning upon you - fighting occuring all around the world i.e. Africa and Asia, and for 2 years britain along with a few other countries struggled to survive -

America has assumed the role of saviour in all this - entering the war and quickly destroying Hitler! However also know that hitler was creating a-bombs himself and was close to production, and also know that it wasnt the american military wh changed the land war in Europe - it was hitlers disasterous campaign in Russia.

France was regained, Italy turned Neutral and mussolini was executed, Spain betrayed hitler and stayed neutral - japan yielded to the a-bomb and the military manpower of russia eventually crushed hitler in the east.

All these factors contributed to the axis defeat and to say that America "saved our butts" is the most stupid sentiment, if britain had yielded then Europe would have fallen. America would have had no staging post for land and air raids into europe and hitler would have turned his eye towards the good old US of A.

just a little food for thought

Hi 'Shy ~waves~ ;)

basically the USA did help, but it was Russia who broke the armies of Hitler (all be it with help of equipment and supplies of the US) and UK being free means that there was a place to launch air attacks and later to launch D-Day.
And also that France and UK tried appeasement with Germany, because of guilt of the versaille agreement and that no one saw Hitler as war monger (he did pull Germany out of the economic crisis of '33 which alot of countries were still submerged, off course that was because he was bankrupting the country and he had to start a war in 1940 so germanny wouldnt go bankrupt).

I do think that the fact that UK stayed free, meant that Germany could be harrased by bombers and the luftwaffe slowly destroyed (which again helped the Russians) and later on D-Day helped speed up the defeat of Germany and probably means that half of europe remained capitalistic countries.
