I keep getting an error with this file in many programs.

It brings up a "send error report" screen and the error contains this:

C:\DOCUME~1\Tom\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER74.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

Firstly it happend in IE, so I switched to firefox, now it's happening in firefox. I've been getting it in call of duty too.

I've tried everything I can think of:

Scanning for viruses
Scanning for spyware
And even Formatting

Nothing is working. This error persists on coming up. I formatted on wednesday and it seemed OK (Although I got it once... it seemed ok..) until yesterday when it started to become more frequent again.. now it's happening every 3 or 4 clicks in firefox or IE!

My system:-
AMD XP2800+
Gigabyte 7N400-L
1gb TwinMOS PC3200 DDR
Hercules Radeon 9800

Running windows XP pro with all the critical updates.

Searching google for "appcompat.txt" brings up plenty of people with the same problem as me but no fixes... Anyone know what's wrong? It's really starting to annoy me now.

After formatting, what have you installed?

try this

Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Error Reporting box (near bottom right) > Select Disable Error Reporting (selecting the 'notify me when critical errors occur' option is up to you) > OK all the way out.

You may or may not have to restart after.

Well it hasn't happened since (although i've probably jynxed myself by saying that.)

By turning off error reporting the error is still occuring though, isn't is? Wouldnt the program still crash, just without the error report box?

The file itself sounds like a temporary one, I don't think that is the problem, any critical error would just create the same file.

Why don't you actually read the error report, it might give a clue as to what was causing it.
