OK peeps, i've just bought my first Anime film(s) - Patlabor 1 + 2, as i keep hearing all these things about Anime being so good yadda yadda yadda. I bought Patlabor, because out of all the others, it just caught my eye the most, ahead of Neon Genesis.

Anyone have any thoughts/recommendations on any other decent films/series. Seeing as though this is a verily much looked over genre with regards to pretty much anyone, and everyone i know.

Thx in advance ya'll!

Excel Saga and Puni Puni Poemi, they take the piss out of both the genre and the retarded KAWAII ^_____^ fans. As such they are genius.

Patlabor rocks

I highly recommend Akira. I've seen many other animes, but Akira is by far one of the best. Try to get the 20th Anniversary edition, if you can - the remastering and redubbing makes the film an easier watch. Just watch it with an open mind.

Others that are worth watching are Urotsukidoji - Legend of the Overfiend (v. wierd), Fist of the Northstar, Metropolis, Appleseed, Dominion Tank Police, the Guyver series and Ghost in the Shell.

There's a hell of a lot of anime out there, good and bad. Good places to look for cheap anime DVDs are computer fairs I've found, if you have any in your area.

Perfect Blue is an amazing movie, its unlike any anime I have seen, its more proper film than sci fi action.

Akira has got to be your first stop I would think. It more or less was the start of anime being introduced outside Japan.
As well from my own collection:
Perfect Blue
Cowboy Bebop (Movie)
Metropolis
Ninja Scroll
Ghost in the Shell
Macross Plus (Movie)
Blood the last vampire

also love Fist of the North Star - must get that on DVD at some point.
Got Lensman and Vampire Hunter D on video.

Watch the whole Cowboy Bebop series, it's a fantastic story and has some really beautiful moments in it. My favourite ending to any series.

Hellsing, Initial D, Trigun and Matantei Loki Ragnarok.

For Region 2, the recent releases of Castle In The Sky, Spirited Away, Kiki's Delviery Service and Princess Mononoke are well done. Watch My Neighbour Totoro too :D

Good choice with Patlabor btw, the first is still one of my favourites.

First up akira, shut up, its shit.

Really, i'm an anime fanboy, and its so amazingly overrated as a genre defining film.

1. 3x3 eyes is indeed top.

2. Not seen excel saga or Puni Puni Poemi yet.

3. Dax branch out from the american fanime list please.

4. Ch3tan. thats because you've probably watched a lot of crap, and you've missed a lot of the good filmd that have been released in anime form that havnt been dubbed etc.

And yes Perfect Blue is a cracking film

5. Stormrider - metropolis is good. GITS good. Macross plus - please, watch all of macross/genesis climber mospeada/southern cross & the robotech trilogy series as well.
Blood isnt bad but FAR too short.
Ninja Scroll - kinda crap actually.

6. Cowboy Bebop - where do i begin? its really well animated and some great bits in it, but a little emotionally dry for a series that tries to be so involving.

7. Babs! one of the few sane people here.

Hellsing, Initial D, Trigun all great series.

Not a huge fan of mononoke, its alright, not great.

General stuff:

Akira, its shit, get over it. Worth watching to see what the hypes about, but ultimately shit.

Ghost In The Shell, OMG MATRIX CLONE FFS!!11oneoeneoneoene

wachowski brothers are anime fanboys, they nicked a lot of stuff, GITS is a good film, the new series and film are good as well.

Patlabor, got the boxset, thought it was ok, wasnt amazing.

Ignore the shouts of Cowboy Bebop - it's bloody awful. Nice animation and stuff, but the stories and characters skin the surface, it feels so empty when watching it.

No ECA its because while I appreciate the animation I dont care for the shambles of story lines and pointless action of most anime. Thats why I like Perfect Blue.

Cowboy Bebop and Trigun i find are the two funniest series i've watched.

My favourite ever though has to be Neon Genisis:evangelion. Great stuff

My mate reccomends Love Hina even though you need to watch the whole series and 3 films for it to properly conclude

Read or Die is probably my favorite Anime. The hero's super power sounds dull (she can 'use' paper!), but is probably the most original and well thought-out abilities I've seen used for a long time.

Other titles I'd recommend:

Bubblegum Crisis: Metatokyo 2040, Bubblegum Crisis, Bubblegum Crash
Appleseed
Macross, Macross 2, Macros Plus
Noir
Hellsing
Blood: The last Vampire

And anything by Miyazaki is definitely worth watching: Princess Mononoke, Naussica of the Winds, Spirited Away, etc...

Personally i think the must see uk pruchases would probly be Hellsing, noir, Excal saga and the original bubble gum crisis.

If you can import or downlod then Slam dunk is probly the funniest classic series.

Blood the last vampire was rubbish. Vampire hunter D was good though.

The version of streetfighter 2 by manga was spot on.
