I find it hard to beleive that a human civilization could be so cataclysmicaly wiped out that they forget such basics as the wheel.

A good thing to look at is the precision needed to create a lot of the ancient structures, modern experts state they would need diamond precision tools to emulate them.
And also lets imagine a comet his tommorow and wipes out millions and causes a massive tsunamia and earthquakes worldwide and then causes an ice age. Now lets imagine the world 10s of thousands of years ago where we did not have electricty and central heating ect. The ice age would kill a massive % of the worlds population and those that survived would need to concentrate on pure survival. If the skills and knowledge where not needed they would fade after a view generations and eventually become forgotten.

Its not hard to understand, many ancient structures are made so well that todays experts admit they would need diamond precision tools to emulate the feat. Yet from what we know they didnt have these or electricity, so how did they manage it?

I'd answer it with time, simple as that.

Todays handywork, with all the equipment and, as you said, diamond precision tools, is a lot less skill based. Back then, when you had to create a king a tablet of epic detail, you did it with a toothpick and 24/7/365 work.

Also you learned to do things without relying on modern tools.

Ancient Mysteries - Puma Punku in Tiahuanaco

Thats one of the examples i mean and also helps reinforce the lost civilisation theory.
"Did they have advanced technology similar to ours, and then die off?

Maps have been found that would seem to support this theory. Maps such as the Piri Reis (1513), and the Oronteus Finaeus (1531), have been found that pre-date European discoveries. Not only are these maps precise, but they seem to claim that they are copies from even older maps.

These maps show the coastline of South America, rivers, and even part of Antarctica which was not thought to have been mapped until 1818. These maps contain landmarks, as well as depictions of the areas which appear to be very accurate. Some people don't believe that these maps could have been made without flying over these areas in the sky. "

Ancient civilisations had one thing we don't - slaves

You can get a lot done when you work people to death!

The ordinance survey maps of the UK are incredibly accurate and they were just blokes on the ground using simple geometry and mathematics

There is lots of mysteries around inn the world, one of them being how people actually made all that shit. But it's hard to know, when there is no real hard evidence of anything(Or they might keep something from us tho).

More fun is if they forgot about us ;p

Someone once said a nice line;

Don't know which would piss me off more, us being the last race in the galaxy, or the first.

id prefer last i think, at least you can find all the cool shit the other civilisations have left lying about.

if we're first we might die out before anyone else evolves beyond single cells.
