Best gangster movie in a long time. In my opinion it is right up there with Godfather, Scarface, Carlitos Way and Casino. Denzel and Crowe are on top form, you will not realise 2 and a half hours have gone by the end.

Its a pretty good film but your arse might hurt sitting through it in the cinema.

Given the way the film is produced its meant to be about the rise and fall of two men, Frank Lucas and the detective.

Which would be fine, except then they tack on 20-30 mins of crap with franks lovelife. which is pretty meaningless and you have 0 emotional attachment to his girl.

It is a great film but it doesn't compare to the above (and of course Goodfellas).

Denzel was the highlight in American Gangster, he was great and made the film.

I also have to say I didn't think it was as good as The Departed, not far off but not quite as good.

Same, thought it was excellent, one of the best films I've payed to see in ages.

Acting was good, music was good and the plot was interesting. Personally, I prefer it over Scarface and Goodfella's but thats me. Hope it wins an oscar.

I became a fan of Denzel Washington after seeing Training Day. He seems to adopt to different roles so easily. I would like to see this film but there's no chance the missus will go see it with me.

She was actually critical to the plot...

She was actually critical to the plot as it was her buying of Frank's brash coat that bought him in to the limelight that thus is potential downfall.

Disagree, it was more him going and getting pimp tickets to a high profile boxing match and being introduced to one of them that did that.

Earlier in the film Denzel had bollocked his cousin or brother or whatever he was for wearing flash clothes because that is what gets you caught. When his mrs gave him the coat he only took it and wore it because it was off her, have a look at that scene again and his face shows that he didn't want it.

It's by no means a bad film, but no one will remember it in six months time. You can see what Scott tried to do with two parallel narratives, but it would have been better if it had just stuck with the whole 'american dream turned on it's head' theme and nailed that. It's just a bloated mess with some nice set-pieces.
