I think the UK should invade the US. No one would see it coming. After all, we could claim they have WMDs and this time we would be entirely justified!

It seems China and Russia arent too happy at the US. The BBC seem also to suggest some US big wigs are pushing for a military strike.

Can anyone else see the end of the world coming soon?

A democracy is defined as:
1. A political system for choosing and replacing the government through free and fair elections. - check, ableit they have a wierd system where the elected members vote in non-elected members via the Guardian Council
2. The active participation of the people, as citizens, in politics and civic life.- check
3. Protection of the human rights of all citizens. - check
4. A rule of law, in which the laws and procedures apply equally to all citizens. - check, regardless of what he does he is still bound by Iranian law and is accountable

There is no mention of free media as being a pre-requisite for a democratic body ruling the country, so long as all the opposition parties have equal access
Tony Blair joined a war when he wanted... a president/prime minister is elected to make decisions like that, i fail to see your point as there is no distinction between "democratic countries" and Iran in that respect

You do realise china doesnt have independant media either, yet things seem to be going fine there

This despite them having un-restricted internet access (something not even china has) which is available to most middle class households (source: BBC)

We hardly have a good situation here seeing as Mr Murdock owns most of the press and media already, now he is looking to buy out Sky too. You only have to look as far as how many people read the Sun and take it as gospel if you want to see brainwashing, or maybe the smear campaign which primed the general public before the war with Iraq

lol? seriously just read back that statement and try justify it with actual proof

Iran has the highest growth rate science and technology in the world, China is in second place, they helped build projects for CERN how on earch can you say they arent educated (Compact Muon Solenoid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
And 77% of the country is literate (Iran Literacy - Demographics) and has grown 11% in 9 yrs

The fact of the matter is that war has never solved anything in an evolving country, womens rights have come a long way in a relatively short period of time in the country and they are making leaps and bounds, which conviniently you fail to mention

For all his faults the guy has done a good job building the country

As i said earlier. Goverment controlled media and someone to blaim for everything does wonders for your popularity. And if he should become unpopular at some point, he would still stay in power.

How can democracy work if theres no independent media? Its true that this doesnt work perfectly in the US either but its alot better there.

China is doing well. But how? They are exploiting a majority of their people. Thats a whole other discussion though. But there is alot of crap going on in China right now.

Ok maybe they are well educated then, but so were the Germans. Still one goverment was able to fool alot of people in to killing completely innocent people without any good reason. People can not decide for themselves if they dont get to hear all the opinions.

Yeah ok. But still, thats -50% of voters. Perhaps not in 10 years. But we're talking about whats happening now. Im sure most of them would vote for someone else if they could. Excluding the ones that have been brainwashed to believe that they are here to serve the men.

Hitler did a good job building the country. And what did he do after he had built it?

The idea that this guy would be untouchable by any foreign power is just scary.

But do remember that I said i wouldnt want him to have nukes. I dont support a war if theres no nukes.

Its not government controlled...
its controlled by the major parties in the country, please make that distinction
ALL parties in Iran have a voice through the media, the concervatives just have the loudest as the west doesnt like what they are saying

What opinions exactly are you talking about?
If they want to discuss issues outside party politics and government issues the main demographic who would partake in private discussions have access to them, i.e. middle class homes
If you want to see party-politics the broadcast media is controlled by the state parties (again not the government)
They dont have free-press but neither do they have a completely controlled press, content is censored where it is deemed necessary just like it is in China.
Another few government was able to fool alot of people in to killing completely innocent people without any good reason
(If you are offended by burning flags dont click spoiler)

There is little comparison between Iran and nazi-germany if you actually look at things, more on that later

Their vote is irrelevant to the person in power being biased, if only some women who supported the government had a vote then your argument would hold true but that is not the case, or are you trying to say that every male in Iran is brainwashed into voting a certain way
There is NO bias in the voting system by definition as noone has an unfair advantage

Hitler wanted world domination, that is the ONLY reason the rest of the world got involved. Hitler was fu***ing over the Jews long before anyone else got involved, the world war wasn't some crusade to get rid of a villain, it was because said villain decided he wanted more
Secondly Hitler fu**cked over people in his own country, this isnt taking place in Iran so please stop bringing him up as an example because it is ridiculous,
a) iran isnt a dictatorship
b) its populous isnt being percecuted
c) they have yet to expand their terriroties, and any suggestion that they are going to, is pure speculation based on little/no evidence

You however are doing exactly as Hitler did, finding a scapegoat for the trouble in the region, just replace Jews with Iranians.

Threatening to whipe Israel off the map in every second speech and a president of a country publicly saying that Holocaust never happened is perfectly normal ofc.

President of Israel said exactly the same thing
<waits for aika to suggest Israel is invaded>

he also said there should be an "immediate halt to fighting in Lebanon between Israel and the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah." ;)

Welcome to the propoganda machine

President of Israel? Maybe you mean Prime Minister, and I doubt he would want to whipe his own country off the map :E

And I never said that Iran should be invaded, it would only cause greater problems. I would happily see his evil regime fall due to domestic resistance though.

you know what i meant
On 08 May 2006, Israeli Vice Premier Shimon Peres said in an interview with Reuters that "the president of Iran should remember that Iran can also be wiped off the map"
And in 2003 prior to that statement
"ISRAEL has warned that it is prepared to take unilateral military action against Iran if the international community fails to stop any development of nuclear weapons at the country’s atomic energy facilities."
and in 2005 Ariel Sharon readied their assests for possible strikes on secret uranium enrichment sites in Iran

we could play this game all night, but it wont really achieve anything neither side is blameless
The powers that be just happen to like one side, and want the "evil regime" (rofl) flattened

I personally hope he has the forethought to think they might lose and sell their oil reserves at shared investment to the russians/chinese so they have a bit of clout in the international community, wont make them such a ripe target to the yanks :p

And they only said that as a response to an Iranian threat?

And Iran's populous isn't persecuted?

"A Reporters Without Borders report indicates permanent restriction of the press and denounces an application of censorship found to be systematic. Iran is one of the ten most repressive countries of the world concerning freedom of the press. Journalists detained in prison are often harassed and humiliated, as was Zahra Kazemi, an Irano-Canadian journalist who died in prison."

"100 newspapers and other publications have been closed by the regime since April 2000. There are currently 10 journalists in prison. Reporters Without Borders considers Iran to be "the biggest prison in the Middle-East for journalists"."

"Irreligious people in Iran are not recognized as citizens ... Non-believers — atheists — under Islam do not have "the right to life". Apostasy in Iran is punishable by death."

"Post-pubescent women are required to cover their hair and body in Iran and can be arrested for failing to do so[35] In Spring 2007, Iranian police have launched a crackdown against women accused of not covering up enough, arresting hundreds of women, some for wearing too tight an overcoat or letting too much hair peek out from under their veil."

-source: wikipedia.

Thats a very nice country to live in, isn't it?

And Stalin made his country from almost medieval to a modern one in a very short period, was his regime good as well?

Just think about it, I really dont know how can you support such regimes like the current Iranian one.

""Irreligious people in Iran are not recognized as citizens ... Non-believers — atheists — under Islam do not have "the right to life". Apostasy in Iran is punishable by death."
for the record; it doesnt say that anywhere in Islam

it sounds like a pretty big dramatisation
I have a friend working there as a consultant who happens to be caucasian and a atheist working for Royal Dutch Shell (company under the Shell group) in Tehran
He is yet to be stoned to death, or beheaded

noone claimed they have a free-press so i fail to see your point.

I dont support them particularly, but i dont see how its any of anyone else's business how the country is run if the people in it are content, there are a hell of alot worse places to live than Iran
Why not try sorting out places like Dafur or East Tamil where aid is actually needed rather than poking sticks in bee's nests

How do you know they are content if they cant really express themselves?
I lived in the USSR and I can assure you that most people were content there, simply because they didnt know any other way of living.
Pretty much same case with Iran now, brainwashing and religious blindess, somehow it reminds me of "1984" or the period of the early medieval ages in Europe, also called "The Dark Times".

And what are you suggesting they replace it with?
A ruined economy as all the wealth has gone to foreign companies
A "democracy" where you can be in charge so long as it's the party the invading army agree's with
Crippled infrastructure

I really cannot see any positives coming out of a war to be frank

Whats the other option? Maybe actually let a country evolve at its own pace rather than running in and screwing things up. In the history of the modern world the only places that have benefitted from invasion are the ones that were put there by the powers at be, iran will be no exception.

At the moment America is like a dying bear, aggressive and desperate.
Their economy is consistently losing way to the chinese, and their main resource is getting into scarce supply so they are forced to go out and grab what they can
Iran will no doubt turn into Vietnam 3

Edit: to be honest all this anti-west rhetoric is hard for me to swallow,
1,659,000 people visited iran from abroad in 2004, a large number from Germany, France and other european countries countries who ran organized tours of Iranian archaeology,
The inudstry was worth $2 billion (10th most popular tourist destination), if there was serious anti-west sentiment then this simply wouldnt happen

I never said they should invade Iran, read my posts :)
I just said that this regime is not really better than Stalin's one and that I hope the people in Iran will realise that and replace their president/make reforms that will allow more freedom.

Lets just face it, let em fucking nuke eachother, what do we care.

I mean if they have enough weapons to blow up the world, then invade, but 1-2 nukes and i think someone will get the msg that this may not be too good.

Personally we should just let them get on with it, its not our business what they want to do to eachother.

You do realise there are very severe consequences when you use nuclear weapons? ("nuclear winter", fallout, soil poisoning, wind spreading radioactive reagents etc..)
Just look what happens in Chernobyl area now..

"The Supreme Leader also is commander-in-chief of the armed forces and controls the Islamic Republic's intelligence and security operations; he alone can declare war or peace. He has the power to appoint and dismiss the leaders of the judiciary, the state radio and television networks."

So yeah.... its goverment controlled.

You cant run for president without the approval of Ali Khamenei.

"The Iranian Parliament is a unicameral legislative body whose 290 members are publicly elected every four years. It drafts legislation, ratifies international treaties, and approves the country's budget.

Parliament is held in check by the Council of Guardians, the influential oversight body that examines all laws passed by Parliament to determine their compatibility with sharia, or Islamic law. At times, the council, half of whose members are appointed by the Supreme Leader, has struck down up to 40 percent of the laws passed by Parliament."

Not a dictatorship. Nope! Really..... no!

Yeah its not as "blunt" as it is in China for example but still he has the power of a dictator.
