AMD Processor question

Hi, I never used AMD processors, but atm I seem to be moving to amd from intel, as they are much cheaper.

So the main question:

Which one of these is better and why (cheaper memory for it, etc)?

AMD AthlonXP 3000+ (2100MHz) 512KB L2 cache 400MHz Bus Barton

AMD AthlonXP 3000+ (2166MHz) 512KB L2 cache 333MHz Bus Barton

AMD AthlonXP 3200+ (2200MHz) 512KB L2 cache 400MHz Bus Barton

OR

AMD Athlon 64 2800+ (1800MHz) 512KB L2 cache

Personally, I think I'm gonna take the 3000+ 333 MHz one, but I it's better to know from someone who knows ;)

Well, the higher the model number, the better they are! (surprisingly enough).

The AMD Athlon 64 is, as you might guess by it's name, a 64 bit processor, so you need compatible motherboard.

Any of the other ahtlons are fine too

Ah, skip my question, I read myself.

Seriously, even tho I'm and Intel fanboi I have two choices now:

Pentium 4 3.0GHz + 1gb RAM = ~ 440 euro (in my country)
Athlon XP 3000+ (2.1GHz) + 1gb RAM = ~ 340 euro

So, is the +1GHz of Pentium > ~100 euro? :p

Well it's hard to tell until they start compiling for 64-bit cpu's really. Oh and with Intel it's way easier to make a STFU solution for your PC.

I'd go with the 64-bit AMD.

Hmm.... I checked some benchmarks, it clearly says that hi-end P4's out perform the high-end Athlons. So I'm prolly gonna spend more, but get a faster system ;)

A quick stupid question

What DDRAM is needed for P4 with 800MHz FSB - PC3200 or something else?

heh, I'd get a 3000+ athlon and spend the diff on beer. in a real pc, you will not notice your cpu make imo.

Actually, the main reason I like P4 better is HT. And I'll need it, as I want to run 2 DAoCs, and when your CPU is split to 2 CPUs, the clock speed is prolly cruicial, as I'll get technically, 2 1.5GHz CPUs :)

heh, I'm slow to adopt new tech. and....I'm under the distinct impression that a kernel with decent timeslicing will beat HT, but maybe that's just me :(

I wouldn't buy an Athlon64 right now... as the Socket939 models are about to come out and will need new motherboards, and have better upgrade potential, as the current Athlon64s will become obsolete.

+ I doubt you'll notice much difference running 2x DAOC, with a high end P4 or A64.

personally i won't be moving to 64s for a while yet... i'll let everything settle down abit as new stuff'll be poring out of AMD and intel like ther's no tomorrow before long

You can D/L a free 1year eval from MS

I cant wait till i can get my grubby hands on a dual 64 core, screw huper threading when you got 2 cpu's connected with a fat hyper transfer bus

No point getting socket 939 stuff now imo. Until they start making use of the technology it'll be time to upgrade again anyhow. Let them release it tho, and get a regular 64 dirt cheap. As TdC said, get beer for the cash you save ;)

I bought the XP 3200+ as you can use the faster RAM and get I think 17-20% improvement.

HT works in conjunction with the kernel, not incompetition. It's basicaly a limited form of SMP. It's nothing like the boost a lot of synthetic benchmarks put it at though, as one of the major factors for gaming is memory speed - and HT CPUs are no faster accessing memory than non-HT. Addtionally you don't gain any graphics card performance.

Personally I'd recommend the athlon - they're faster for games in general, and the 400MHz memory bus will help more than HT for most stuff. Don't be fooled by it being 1GHz faster, that doesn't equate to more speed as the p4s take more cycles to do operations than athlons. An XP3000+ is a similar speed to a p4 3GHz.
