anyone got an idea how much of a performance gain it would be to upgrade from and AMD 3000 XP (Socket A) to a 3800 X2 64 (Socket 939) ?

The later is a dual-core CPU, so I guess quite handy for some vid making, just aren't all that sure how much the gain for games would be.

haven't found a comparison for those CPUs, guess the old Socket A are just that ... old :p

any ideas ? :)

U will see a performace boot when running more than 1 app..

when it comes to things like Video editing the software need to support dual processors b4 u will see any real differance.

know that, just wondering how much of a boost the 64-bit architecture of the new CPUs is compared to the old ones.

i recently changed from a 3200+ barton (socket A) to a 4400+ X2 (socket 939) and my comp got quite a boost.

but however it depends if you should upgrade on other stuff, maybe you need a better gfx card or more ram more then a new cpu...

gfx is a 6600GT, and 2gig DDR400 RAM is quite enough, so next on the upgrade list is CPU/Mainboard ;)

you will see none at all unless you multitask alot (as in rescource hugging programs) when you have dual core vs singel core.
You also dont really get the full benefit of 64-bit without geting a operating system which is made for 64bit processors.

As much as it goes against my morals i suggest you get a Intel as daoc seems to be tailored for Intel Chipsets (dual logging etc)

I went form AMD 2500+ Socket A to an AMD 3000+ socket 939 and the difference is very noticable.

I was having problems with my old 6600GT AGP so I decided to get a new system in PCI-E.

I can now dual log extremely fast and even with dual logged, zoning in to poc or whatever only takes a few seconds.

Overal my computer is much faster.

problem with AMD's is that daoc isnt very well coded for them,
you will find you still cant run a bot on stick with a AMD (at least thats what i found) whereas you can with a Intel

Be aware that you might have to assign DAOC to run on a single processor on a dual core system.... At least I have to.

Apparently the program cant handle running DAOC treads on different physical processors.

If you have the problem the symptoms are that after around ½-1 hour of play the memory usage suddenly skyrockets and the program crashes. Just before that you will experience flickering textures.

One possible solution is to right click on the game.dll process in the windows task manager and select the menuoption 'Set processor affinity' and just tick one processer (instead of the default 2 processors)

Moving to a 939 socket is better, and getting a new (Venice-core) AMD is even better, since it increases your memory bandwidth.

A dualcore will give you even more increase. :)

That is most likely thanks to Hyperthreading on the Intel CPU. P4 with HT is a better multitask CPU than AMD´s standard singlecore CPU´s (better as in more responsive). With an X2 there is no problem with sticking a buffbot etc.

I'm on a AMD64 3500+ with 2 gig ram - and I can't run two accounts on the same box (even playing about with the processor priorities). What happens is both accounts go LD at the same time - I think there must be a bug somewhere - but I'm not sure what its associated with.

My GM suggestest people with PCI-e mobo's were having this problem?

i got a dualcore 3800+, is great for logging 2 accs on the same comp etc, lightningfast alt-tabbing between the two, no loosing stick etc either. GREAT!!
