Ambient music

What would you guys recomend for ambient music? I hate writing without back ground noise, but if it's too familiar lyrically I find myself singing like a looney and staring into space, which isn't good. I have some of the LOTR music, which is good, and some of the Ozrics music fits the bill, but does anyone have any other suggestions?

Morning :)

*digs out old ambient records*

I'm going on "ambient" as being stuff more like The Orb as opposed to an album full of David Sylvian humming along with Moroccan tribesmen whilst Tibetan monks bang triangles in the background...

So, random burst of bands:

Future Sound of London
The Orb (first 3 albums)
Orbital - Snivilization
Astralasia
System 7
Black Dog
Eat Static (as you like Ozircs you might have some of this already)
CJ Bolland

You know, I could probably get along with the Tibeten monks :) But yes, I was thinking along the Orb lines, though I must admit when it comes to ambient as long as it doesn't sound like a bunch of whales being torured or like some saggy titted woman is playing her tin flute on top of a hill, there's a chance I'll like it. I quite like the Clannad stuff, and I know I'm treading perilously close to the realm of "mood music 19" albums, but when I'm writing it's nice to just have something plodding in the background.

Cheers xtro, I shall be investigating your recommendations :)

Aphex twin selected ambient works 87-something or other.

Some very very good ambient tracks there, if you have a sub woofer, ageispolis is grate! :D

There are one or two tracks on it that are kinda.. well.. scary, but most are pure musical silk.

Zero 7 is good, as is Aphex Twin

Movie soundtracks are good too, the Leon soundtrack is great for background music I find

Ocean's Eleven OST is also pretty fucking special. There's some excellent chillout/ambient on it.

As a matter of fact... :)

The fantastic piano track at the end, when they're all walking away from the foutain in front of the casino? That's Debussy - Claire de Lune an' I wub it. :)

Claire de Lune is a great relaxing piece of music, as are quite a few bits of classical music. The only other one I can think of atm is Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber

Adagio for Strings has to be one of the most covered/remixed/whatever'ed classical tracks of all time. There's loooaaads of them, and they're all fantastic. William Orbit did a nice one, as did Minimalistix on their new album (Elements, for anyone who's interested).

Also (I rant about this track like there's no tomorrow), Adiemus - Song of Tears or, in it's butchered form (used for the Cheltenham & Gloucester commericals with the polynesian boy swimming underwater for pearls or something) Karl Jenkins - Adiemus/Cantilena. Confusingly, he used the group's name in the track title when he edited it for the TV commercial, but the group is known as Karl Jenkins' Adiemus in their later work. Not 100% sure what's going on there, but the track is good. :)

Adagio for Strings takes on a whole new meaning once you've seen Platoon. :(

Yeah :(

That's when I fell in love with it actually, it's just such an emotional piece.

I've got a bunch of CDs downstairs that came free with The Express of classical pieces, there's some quite relaxing pieces on that actually...

It's happened to me a couple of times recently - double or triple posting because I thought the page had timed out so I hit back and resubmitted the reply (clever!). But not four times. :>
