John Terry?
Frank Lampard?
Rio Ferdinand?

All can compete with their respective foreign counterparts in their respective position with Terry being the number 1 defender in the world and Frank Lampard came second in the world player of the year last year

You could probably add Gary Neville and Ashley cole to that list, with an absence of talent in their positions

English players in general are quite sub standard in many areas. Frank Lampard is totally over rated currently and has not met the tag put on his name, especially in the big games. Ronaldo is much the same mind you, all the talk about how good the pair are, but in the big games they are rarely playing anything like how they should be.

Rio is not a worlds best defender either (remember Man utd fan). He is good, but he lacks concentration alot and makes stupid errors that school boys should know better. (ie let ball bounce, taking eye of ball, not watching the runner etc). Just switches off to easily.

And Ashley Cole, PreChelsea he was blossoming into a great player, now he moved clubs he has deteriated. Makes alot of errors and gets turned inside out easily. I can see him being much like Roberto Carlos, great wingback but poor full back (ie strong pushing forward but not the greatest defender but better then a winger).

Us as a country overhype our players. Then we put an outragous price tag on them and stump their development. But thats just my opinion.

True what Corran said. Lampard is incredibly over rated its ridiculous. Shit even Fabregas is better than him and hes only 19.

Henry is one of the few players I'd specifically pay to see play these days. Can't think of any other currently in the Prem who that applies to, except maybe Larsson (more so if it had been 5 years ago).

Name me 5 better centre halfs over Ferdinand excluding Terry. Maybe 3-4 years ago there were plenty better, now I could only name Cannavaro and maybe Lucio . I still cant think of a better left back than cole, due to a lack of them.

I also missed Gerrard off my list who for me is the best midfielder in the world

Just because there are not many people better currently does not make them great player. I take it in context with those that have played in recently couple years. Too early in morning to riddle of a couple more names, maybe later

I was making the point that in terms of current foreign players, our best players can more than compete. I do however, feel we are lacking true world class strikers. Guys like Shearer, Owen (in his prime), Lineker, etc

Cannavaro, Naldo, Puyol, Carvalho and Toure are all better in my eyes, but it's a question of taste. No doubt Ferdinand is a world class defender.

So true. If McLaren had the balls to play Gerrard instead of Lampard through the middle with Hargreaves sitting behind him we'd see a transformed England team. Liverpool's problem is gonna be when Sissoko comes back and Rafa gets the itch to move Gerrard out to the right again - if they do that they'll lose all the momentum they've gained with Gerrard playing through the middle.

As for centre halfs, I still think Woodgate is top class when he's fit. He was outstanding for Middlesbro at Villa this season, better than Ferdinand was for Man U ( he still loses concentration every now and then).
