Gfx card help please

Hi my gfx crad died after a couple of years use. Going to be getting a new machine at some point soon so just looking to replace it with something similar for now.

The problem is I haven't even looked at pc components for a couple of tears now so I don't recognise the naming conventions etc.

My dead card is an nvidia geforce 9800gt and I was just gonna buy another from my local parts dealer but I don't recognise any of the cards on the site

Don't want to be spending loads and something with similar power to the dead one would be fine for now till I upgrade to a new machine.

Ant ideas what u should be looking for?

Kind of related to my other post. Could someone just confirm my conclusion is correct before I buy a new gpu.

Ok. The problem is this.

With 9800gt installed...

On boot up the splash screen and windows loading screen are covered in artefacts. The pc gets to the "loading windows" screen (also covered in artifacts) and then hangs requiring a forced restart. On interrupting the boot sequence to check bios the artifacts are also present in bios screen.

Remove the gpu and use onboard gfx...

All problems are gone pc boots fine and works perfectly ( if a little slower cos the motherboard is dealing with gfx now)

This leads me to believe the 9800gt is broken. But I don't have another card to test in the slot to make sure it's not that... Could it be the pci slot itself? Or am I likely right?

Yup.

Only thing worth checking is that the fan on the graphics card is still spinning. Since it happens immediately this is an unlikely cause and it's more than likely the onboard ram for the graphics card is knackered

If the problem was with the slot, then you'd likely get either a beep when the pc turns on, and no signal, or it would just fall back to the onboard graphics, depending on the bios and full nature of the failure. I'd say it's a definite card problem, every time I've encountered those symptoms before it has been the card at fault.
It is worth checking the fan, as wpkenny says, but I second that it's not that likely. If the fan is no longer spinning, I would say it's more likely that it's been overheating for a while, and something has actually been damaged by prolonged overheating.

The fan still spins. Thanks for the tip.
And thanks for the info about the slot itself. Looking likely that it is the card then.
That leads me to my other question then.

Any ideas on How the current nvidia cards on the Market compare to a 9800gt? Is it a case of mostly all the cards available now will be at least as good? Or is it not that simple?

It depends on your budget really. The really low end cards would probably be a fair bit slower, as some of them are only really good for video acceleration and old games. If you're looking for something quite similar, I'd say the Geforce GTS 450, which is around £85. If you're willing to look at ATI, their 5770 is around the same price, but slightly higher performance from what I can gather, though there's not really that much in it.
If you're not looking at spending that much, just say what the budget is and I'll try and find something that's a decent match for you.

Cheers again. I did some mire research and ended up with a GT 430 1mb for about 40 quid. It's only till I can buy a new system anyway and that should run stuff I need it to. Thanks again all
