Well I missed the 1st point but I'll take the rest of it!

I got a BTEC ND in Computer Studies its only worth is on my CV, cos the course tought me nothing about IT just skimmed the top of IT in the 1980s :( :rolleyes:

are you lot all in the IT business or at uni training for such work, pah what a boring job. Since leaving school I've been training as a mechanic, the pay starts off unbelievably low and doesn't get better for some time, but you find that the things you learn save you so much money, fix your own car, decorate your own house, do your own wiring and plumbing etc, and the fun you have with all the chemicals that you use in everyday work.
I worked in an office once and found it so boring and repetative no wonder people get stressed. Summer days at a garage consist of sitting in the sun drinking beer and waiting for something to break. Winter consists of snowball fights, flamethrowers and bonfires (to keep warn) and taking the biggest truck you can find onto an icy road. I'll never forget the time I sat in the bucket of a new holland digger while the driver slid all over the ice, Scary but fun!

Cool. You might have a point, there Ignus. Though I've personally never fancied any job where I don't spend the day tucked up in a nice, warm building with a cup of coffee.

Plus I'd hate anything that involved actual real labour. A humour author once said "It's indoor work with no heavy lifting" and that's exactly why I work in an office. Plus I'm interested in, and good at what I do. [/arrogance]

How does training to be a mechanic teach you to "decorate your own house, do your own wiring and plumbing etc"?

I agree with everything that SoWat said.

For the firms I have worked for, HR control the hiring/firing and screen candidates before me, and here and at the other 2 companies I have worked for, you don't get past screening without a degree (for permanent positions anyway) - it sucks, I know, but that's just the way it is.

I, personally, don't give a rats arse either way when hiring, a 10 minute interview is all I need to see whether you have lied on your CV (if you ARE going to lie on it, don't come to an interview with me - I will find out about it, have done before now - will do again I dare say - and I don't mean small lies like GCSE's I mean the BIGGIES like 2 year NT4 server admin exp.)

I look for a good general education background, degree subject if of supreme indifference to me - I go mainly for "will they fit into the team" - if you don't fit into the team, or are missing a sense of humour or appear to be too anally retentive, I'll show you the door, I don't employ workaholics, they frighten me.

and as for "are you lot all in the IT business or at uni training for such work, pah what a boring job" - it's horses for courses, you find it boring, I find it stimulating - I find mechanics and plumbing/decorating boring as hell myself...I guess I'm just fortunate to be doing something that I find extremenly interesting that also pays rather well...

I'll be secretary but I'll need a headset for my phone (for comfortable gossiping) a high leather seat to make me look taller (and to emphasize my calves), company nail file, and an air of despondency.

Sorry to head off topic but I feel I should answer that question.
You'd be surprised at what you learn when you have to do things yourself. In an office you would get paid proffesionals to do the work for you, in a garage you are expected to do the work yourself when you have nothing else to do. Also the electrics in a car are very similar to mains electrics except without the obvious dangers so good for practice.
Recently I bought a £300 pioneer CD player, don't know how much it would have been to get a profesional in to rewire the power supply to constant instead of ignition only, but it cost me bugger all coz I did it myself with only a power testing screwdriver, a length of wire and my teeth.

Fair enough. I'm convinced.

I wouldn't know where to begin if I needed to say, install a second light in a room. I'd be dead within the hour. Install a new shower? Funk dat.

I'm not entirely useless around the house, though. I can install discreat trunking in four rooms, run CAT5e up to an 8-port hub in the attic, connected to a Win2K Server running Exchange 2000 configured to download from four separate POP3 accounts just before my housemates get in from work.

Who's the most useful, eh? Eh?

Okay, you win that one as well... :(

the way i see things...

well, i have an interest in most things (weird i know) and after a while at looking at it i tend to pick on it quickly. Be it computers, cars or at home, its the same

i say keep work as work, and have as many active hobbys as possible

like be a computer IT expert but be a mechy on cars and a DIY geezer round house (like me)

its fun, rewarding, and keeps things separate... always take interest in everything you do and you may find you like it so much you want to do it as a job/hobby...
