It's also important to note that of course employees of the BBC are effectively public sector workers. £92,000 of the publics money for sitting in a chair and talking to people, yes please!

I used to work in local government, in Policy, then Employment Law. As and admin I often had to look at peoples expenses and never really saw any abuse, most of it was claims for petrol for long distance meetings with other local authorities, and the odd hotel bill from Brussels.

Exactly. The clue is in the name: expenses. Implies that something is simply a cost of doing business.

tbh i say "so fucking what" about the expenses, if they are being claimed fairly under the current system then whats all the fuss about.

If the system is flawed then fix it, do not have a go at the mp's that have used it for years, blame the people in whitehall that make the policies for expenses. the current expenses system is obviously shit and needs sorting out, but its always bee nshite, look at the european parliment, now THAT IS taking the piss expenses style (but still within the set out expenses rules)

the whole thing is corruption.

it's fun to see the great socialist labour MPs screwing as much as they can out of the system. with the tories you almost expect it so it's not really that bad.

erm. Who do you think designed the current expenses system, and who do you think has the power to change it? Who presently decides on MPs wages?

I'd like to see them apply the same rules to MP's expenses that apply to private companies and see how far they get arguing with the Inland Revenue!

check the video here: BBC NEWS | Politics | Peer turns fire on BBC presenter

the lord sums the situation up quite nicely, I feel. Obviously there are absuses happening but the underlying message is that its fuck all really.

That dumbass was on Jeremy Vines show on radio 2 today spouting similar bollocks. First thing he asked was how much Vine earned from the BBCs "poll tax". Then he was saying how hard mps work and how trivial some of these claims were.

Way to miss the point by a country mile. Politicians need to be held to a higher ethical standard than the rest of us, otherwise how the hell do they have any moral authority? It may be trivial in a purely financial sense, but at a time when trust in the political system is at an all-time low, there was at least a sense in the UK that politicians may be wrong, but unlike other countries, at least they're not bent. This shows that not only are they all bent, but they're complicit in being bent.

So the guy who claimed £16000 to pay off a mortgage he had already paid off was ok then? Apparently he "forgot" that he had already paid it off...I dont think so somehow...Clearly thought he could make a sneaky few thousand and get away with it...if anyone else tried something like this they would be facing serious jail time, but as its an MP its a slap on the wrist, "oh havent you been a naughty boy" and he possibly will be made to pay the money back...Justice has been served!

Indeed, that one got me thinking as well. Joe public would be done for fraud and locked up, no doubt about it.

Jesus, if you sign on and work for an hour without telling them you are facing execution.

Scum every single one of them.

Joanna Lumley for PM!!!
