Air Purifiers

As the title says, does anyone know anything about them?

As you may or may not know, I'm allergic to a lot of stuff. Particularly in summer. Anyway, I've been thinking about getting an air purifier, but I'm not sure.

a) Do they really work? Will I notice any difference? I'm allergic to dust mites, *all* types of pollen (which is a joke, as most hay fever sufferers are allergic to about 3 or 4), and unfortunately I'm allergic to rat hair (we have a couple of the little beauts). Are air purifiers good at dealing with these? (These are the only ones that should appear in my flat.)

b) Can anyone recommend any? Bearing in mind I am ridiculously poor and in a lot debt, I cannot spend much at all. I have seen one which sounds like it could be good - AP281 Hepa with Ioniser - it's just about affordable. Long shot but has anyone used this model? I know it says it's only good in 16m2, but that's not a problem as our flat is pretty small.

This is a thread for legitimate answers please. Do not recommend me hay fever medicine or I will punch you in the face with my elite ninja forum violence skills. . Or something. (Hay fever medicine hasn't ever worked, and I've been through them all at one stage or another.)

I bought one for the birth of my daughter because I also had 6 cats. it has the Hepa filter and the ioniser and if I am being honest I do not notice any difference.

However not suffering myself from any allergies it is hard to measure.

They only capture anything that goes through them. When you consider the size of such a device, and the volume of air that it can move, and the effect of opening a door or window, I'd say its a complete waste of money.

Charcoal filters work extremely well in cars, mine gets rid of all exhaust smells from vehicles ahead, but generally there is only one source of air in a car, so everything you breathe gets dragged through the filter. You can't do this in a house.

As for ionised air, this could be a benefit - I have one in my house that must be 15 years old. Sea air is well ionised, if you're near the sea then go for a walk

Yeah, my breathing was definitely a lot better when I lived in Brighton. Back London-ways it's a lot harder.

A quick read of the site suggests to me that you'd be better off with Airfree E60

However given the price difference and the fact that the one you've picked has replacement filters for about £10 that only need changing as and when or (6 to 9 months) then you've probably answered your own question.

wazzox, not a tip, but just to say I feel for you mate. Being allergic to a lot of things not to mention all pollens must be really hard at times :/

They do "work" but aren't some miracle fix.

Vacuuming your flat and cleaning your bed sheets, sofa cushions etc regularly will need to be done because a little thing like that isn't going to remove all the dust produced.

You also need to consider your location and if you have windows open the air purifier will not be able to cope with all the new air circulating through the room.

If you are a bad suffer and have a room that you can keep clean and keep the windows shut during the day when most pollution can get in you may find that they are wonderful, but there is a good chance you won't really notice a difference.

Can't say a purifier helped much for me. Didn't do that much and too noisy to keep on through the night. You might as well just get a regular ionizer which are cheap and quiet to run.

Get a vaccum with HEPA filtration and hoover regularly. Keep windows closed as far as possible and get a fan or two to keep cool if you home gets too warm.

Assuming you've already done that, and risking a punch in the face *pokes the angry beast* :touch: .... have you tried Telfast? Or it's generic name Fexofenadine?

I suffer terribly from hayfever and the 180mg tablets plus a squirt of the aqueous Rhinolast nasal spray helps keep my syptoms in check.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I'll probably just save my money, by the sounds of it. Keeping windows closed isn't a legitimate possibility (unless I want to sit in 30+ degrees constantly). I keep them as closed as possible, but there's a limit.

I'm a little fortaunte in that I've moved to a flat with all laminate flooring, which means there are less places for those evil dust fellas to hide. However, clearing it away regularly is very difficult with my working hours, and the position of furniture etc. means there are places which cannot be cleaned without moving nearly everything, leaving nice little homes for the basts.

Yep Ken, tried them several years back. Nasal sprays simply do not work for me, unless they're Oxymetazoline based. They give some relief, but you cannot use them regularly, so I tend to keep them when it's truly mental. Hay fever sprays clear me for all of about 2 minutes before I'm totally stuffed again.

The only option it seems for me is to go through more serious allergen immonutherapy, althgouh knowing how utterly shit the NHS GP system is I'll no doubt never even get an appointment, let alone be taken and treated seriously without having my symptoms shat on by some overpaid, fat and lazy upper middle class ****. (No offense to any GPs here, but evey one I've ever dealt with fits that description perfectly.)
