have you played the game rynnor? its not even remotely as grindy as the asian version.

what will put most western ppl off is the forced pvp.

rynnor the game is out in Asia and grindy there. The reason its not out in the west is because they are re-doing it for western audience, ie removing the grind, adding content and quests etc.

Aah - my impression was based on the eastern version which reminds me of some of the more nasty bits of original everquest in part :)

It will be interesting to see if they can translate it into a format western markets will go for.

Edit - hmm - someone could do an interesting study of the types of game that do well in the east compared to the west from a 'what it reveals about differences in psychology' standpoint - might be worth a PHD :)

Most of the 'westernisation' they are doing is just translating the quests into western languages, doing western voice-overs and changing quests with story lines that reference things that only Asians will understand.

There are some more things planned such as giving options to make the camera controls more intuitive to western gamers, but the western version won't differ drastically from the eastern version.

It has been confirmed that the game will launch here with what is currently the 1.5 patch in Korea, which adds plenty of new content, but I don't think NCsoft's western department is able to make much changes to the game in terms of adding new content themselves.

So far in what I have played it hasn't seemed very grindy as I levelled reasonably easily and there was enough quests, but I have heard from some people that there is not enough quests to level you later on (although I have also heard that lots of new quests are being added in recent patches to help this). The version we have been testing in beta is 1.0 btw, so there may be some differences to levelling in the full release.

I did read an interesting discussion about something like this before. Someone was saying that there was an enormous grind to reach the maximum rank for a crafting profession, and that in order to deal with this some of the Asian guilds were all working together to grind the rare mats needed for the person to level up their profession. They claimed that this worked well in Asia because people were more willing to work together for the good of their guild than us westerners who are more used to doing things only if it benefits ourselves.
I don't really know how much truth there is in it, but I thought it was interesting anyway.

Really wanted to try this before retail just to make sure it works in UAE. Especially after the issues we had with Tabula Rasa I'm not holding my breath. Looks nice though.

Got to do a fair bit of Abyss and rift PvP over the last weekend, Assassin really begins to shine at level25. (was lackluster up till then to say the least)

The abyss is quite intresting, and takes a little getting used to the extra dimensional combat, some parts were rather zergy (to be expected in beta at least) ranged classes dominating in the usuall battle-lines-drawn-standoff, as an Assassin there was little more i could do than pick off stragglers on low health, however, at least it wasnt just an aoe spamfest like some games, the combat didnt feel too dissimilar to daoc, with the obvious lack of aoe CC, due to the low level cap.

The rift PvP is however f***ing awsome fun, cant wait to take organised FG's for runs into the enamy lands.

Think I'm going to get a pre-order put in for this. been reading up on it for a while, and really does look interesting. Been looking for something that has a decent blend of pvp and pve, where you can choose to focus on one or the other, and switch between the 2, and this looks like it's got a good blend from what I've heard so far.

Aion...there advertisement campaign should read "Aion, it's WoW...but with wings!".

When I log in there is no excitement, I dont give 2 shits about the retarded (kill 5 lame mob) quests. Unless something fucking magical happens, I really cant see the point in this game.

I'm going to give it a try, if it attracts a decent community, that alone could swing it. Also the pvp sounds a lot better than WoW can offer. Worth a try at least I'd say

I think a lot of players are more interrested in the pvp. After the disappointment of games like Warhammer and Darkfall there hasn't been a decent modern mmo released with good quality pvp.

Jeff Strain, the President of Product Development at NCSoft West and one of the founders of ArenaNet, has left the North American arm of the Korean publisher just prior to Aion's much anticipated launch. President of Publishing David Reid also departed. MMORPG.com broke this story on Tuesday.

People leaving before Aion's even out. Sounds a bit like Warhammers "we've made all our testers redundant" japes to me.

dont buy if u like to go about your stuff without the risk of getting ganked every 30 seconds. do buy if you like that sort of things.

i didnt get a choise in the matter as NCsoft decided to give me a preorder CE key because i was subbed to TR when that closed so i might aswell play the damn thing :)

the game certainly has its moments. its not all out bad but it certainly isnt what the hype claims it to be. it looks nice and have some decent gameplay, but at the core its still a asian MMO and it shows. hopefully the 1.5 patch smoothes most of the crap out so i'l hold on till i've played that abit.

/edit: speaking of nothing, wtf is it with asian game devs and not managing to make anything actually look evil? EVERYTHING looks fucking cute!!!

well, the melee combat system is pretty ok. it has chains that only require the starter to be slotted in the QB, same with caster and ranger chains.

and like i said before, the game looks good, but anyone can make a game look good so i dont really factor that in.

and ofc the "epic" story quests are just pure win.

thats pretty much all i can think of when it comes to noteworthy goodness :<

other then that its just like any other MMO.

it might get really fucking good at cap level but noone in the beta have actually been there long enough to actually get a proper experience out of it so that part is anyones guess. and as its been westernized you cant really trust the asian version to much either.

and yes, i know i didnt mention the wings. thats because they really dont have any use in pve, and very limited use in pvp. fighting will still be done on the ground 90% of the time. with wings really only being usefull as an ambush tool, and maybe, just maybe in 1v1's if they dont last to long.

on a possitive note tho, i havent experienced much of any lag whatsoever, so here's hoping atleast that part will be smooth :)

no i never did bother to level to 25. but i tried a few of the previous rvr sessions when cap was 20.

probably wont sub for the game once the free month ends because i dont wanna pay for a boring 25+ levels just to get to the fun stuff.

i kinda have DAoC for that.

Anyone have a spare OB key knocking around? i know people like to pick up 2-3 keys just because they can :p

I have been reading up/looking at videos for the past 2-3 hours and the game looks really good, what really attracts me is the game has been out in asia for sometime and it looks really really polished and after the disasters of both AOC/WAR i feel maybe this could be the game to restore my faith in MMO's.

I realise from looking at the videos and talking to some people that the game doesn't do anything ground breaking but it does everything it says quite well.

I will probably buy the collectors edition off NCstore.com if i can't get an OB key as the extra 40 seconds of flight time could come in handy?

:iagree: yeah.. it sucks, right?
but maybe, it was intended just like in WoW. most of the spells won't work if cast it when the enemy's not in front of you.

... and what counts as "in front of you" when you're in flight, or can you not cast at all then?

If you turn in wow using the mouse whilst casting, doesn't the cast still work? I was sure it did. In Aion it seemed if you turned it cancelled the cast but I may be wrong.

in woW you can turn as much as you like, both with the mouse and the keyboard and it wont cancel any casting. in Aion, while you can turn the CAMERA while casting, doing anything at all with the actual character will interrupt the cast.

yes aion have autofacing but its fucking horribly done and can easily be LOS abused.
