Now we have had a bit more playtime what do people think?

Will it be a new classic or another MMO flop?

Personally I'm still uncertain - a lot depends on the endgame - some issues have arisen so far:

1.Queue's - hopefully not a long term issue but it hasnt been handled particularly well.

2. Support - Euro servers are supported on US West Coast business times - lol.

3. Gold sellers/scammers - tons and no real signs of anyone banning them.

On the plus side the game itself is very polished (as youd expect for a year old game) with very few bugs - shame they didnt get GOA to host it in Europe...

Well, the support, I've not needed it yet, but it surprises me that they'd use US times, as the EU servers are actually located in one of their EU offices I believe. I know that NC Soft have a studio in England also, so it would surprise me to hear they don't have some people there covering the EU support.
As for the gold sellers, they have taken steps to get rid of them, and are looking to implement more. The sellers seem a lot LOT more determined than on some other MMOs *cough*WoW*cough*, they're actually buying accounts and levelling characters to be able to spam on Aion, since they put a limit on what level you can start using chat channels and whispers, so they're taking measures, but the gold sellers are as well. If they can get a report feature in a future patch, I'm sure that will make the process quicker with regards reporting them, but the only way gold sellers will REALLY leave a game is if people don't fecking use them! but people are lazy, and do use them, so they will do everything they possibly can to get their spam in there. To get rid of all possible ways for them to spam would mean getting rid of all possible ways for people to talk to each other as well.

I would have given a lot for something like the addon SpamSentry from WoW in Aion, which blocked gold spammers automatically -- it really is endemic at the moment.

Otherwise I enjoy the game a lot, even the grinding and slow leveling that might be off putting to some. Still uncertain how long it'll last though, since I'm not sure how the endgame will be.

Its only Level 5 though which takes practically no time to reach so no deterrent there. Gold sellers always buy accounts but I have also seen a lot of phishing attempts trying to steal peoples accounts on Aion.

Theres a system but you can only raise a ticket during West Coast business hours and tickets are deleted the next day - tbh reading around a bit NCsoft have a bad reputation for ignoring bots and gold sellers in order to save themselves customer service costs.

aye, NCsoft really dont give a damn. it may be forbidden in their EULA (havent read any of it so i dunno if its even there) but they dont actually work towards getting rid of it.

they are so ignorant about it i'm starting to suspect that they have their own little side business of RMT...

The Start at the level cap is so incorrect w/ Aion.

A full set of level 30 PVP Geared lvl 30 can beat a full pve geared lvl 40+

-15% damage reduction and +15% output..... along with the speed bonuses and the 3 extra manastone slots per gear piece...

Once you hit 30 you can easily just grind AP in a small group and get some awesome awesome stuff.

That in hand w/ the nature of consumeables ( flight speed, duration , anti CC and healing pots are all mandatory... ) means a decently geared and well prepared lowbie can take out a much higher level player.

To prove the point, we have lvl 42s/43s on Telemachus but the highest ranking player last week is currently only 34.

Hear this a lot, many players seem to hit the grind wall at around the level 30 mark.

Speaking to some friends who are in the 30's they mostly complain about bots farming everything which is slowing down their levelling and screwing over their limited gaming time once they finally get into the server.

I guess you can only grind so much, if your finding yourself only grinding and having no fun playing, then it's obviously become more a chore and probably not worthwhile.

I always find when levelling in mmo's gets boring i stop for a week, go pvp, explore, craft or just generally screw around with the lowbies :)

While I think Aion is a good game and I can't think of many particular faults with it, I have had no motivation to play it for over a week now. This may be mostly due to lots of other things changing atm (I've just started uni) that mean that I have had less time for gaming and also less interest in it; but I have also noticed that even when I have been gaming recently I haven't had any desire to play it.
I think I'll probably cancel my sub and then try re-subbing when I'm more settled and have more spare time.

if you're 32+ and the grind is getting you down - go fire temple, really breaks it up. one of my major complaints was that i had to solo to level as fast as possible and to me that is totally the antithesis of an mmo (especially when playing a cleric..!), but i'm able to level efficiently in fire temple now and even if we can't make a guild group there is always a tonne of people waiting outside to make pugs.

At 30 you get fire temple access ( well farm a key first ).
also have you kept your aether/vitality gathering up? they make you good money for good gear that helps a lot.

Hell at 29 find a healer buddy and go ganking in the abyss :)

Havn't noticed bots except when I went rifting into asmo land. ( lvl 40 )

There ware way more quest hubs than people think, check the aionarmoy.com quest npc location for the three 20+ levelling zones,. ( of which one is 30+ )

Was so looking forward to this. Then I hit the queues and lost all motivation to play. The peeps I joined with were 10+ lvls above me last time I logged in a week ago and solo lvling is a no no. I was all for them not creating 100's of servers at launch but what they left just killed it for me. Get home from work to meet a 2.5h to 3 hour queue was just to much. Playing DAoC after a 4-5 year break and having a blast ;)

Looks like a lot of folk are leaving which is pretty much the way of MMO's - tough to say if not opening new servers early was a factor though I tend to think it was - no fun to start a new game that you cant play.

I dont think Aion is a hit or a miss - it will continue on for a few years at the kind of level of Lord of the Rings online or similar.

I kinda like it so far, im just lvl20 but I like it in general, nice graphics and animations that actually runs smooth, the system with chains is kinda nice (way way better than GCD). Slowish leveling but I like that (feels abit more like daoc did at the beginning)

So far, so good.

Some changes could be good for the game though but I suppose NCsoft will get there, I have far more confidence in them than Mythic/GOA at least. Not sure why people are bothered by goldspammers, I turned of channel 3 and block the few whispers and thats that, perhaps the situation isnt as severe on Perentos as on other servers.

Ques are annoying but they should easen up pretty soon when the first % of players decide to not renew once their first month expires.

Very few disconnects, very few problems overall. I'd say that its a hit. If I compare it to WAR or Conan for example then its definately a hit.

i'm kinda amused tho. ppl usually give grinding as the major reason why a game isn't as good as it could be. yet when a game like this comes that have more quests then you know what to do with, ppl STILL end up grinding because its faster leveling.....

its just........

yes the items isnt very good compared to other games. but thats because this game isnt all about gear > skill, its the complete oposite.

the game is MADE to keep idiots in "uber" gear from beating the living snot out of more skilled ppl that dont have the time to farm said "uber" gear.

even the pvp gear doesent mean a guaranteed win against someone in "normal" gear, even against someone that 10+ levels below you.

if you dont know how to play you WILL die, regardless of what gear you have.

in WoW for example, a complete idiot in the best pvp gear is a fucking pain in the ass to kill because in that game its the gear you have that determines how good you will do in pvp. not how skilled at the game you are.

well manastones will have a big effect, for example a full set of +85 hp stones in a full set of abyss gear will give you around 3k more hp. i do like that the gear is not as 'omg!' as wow, for sure, but it will definitely have some effect. when you think about more hp as i mentioned, then there is also more flight time, more crit (in a game where crits have pretty ott multipliers) and more importantly than anything else - attack speed, which is like +cast speed% in daoc, just it works for all types of attacks and casts.

yes ofc abyss gear will have an effect. and a fight between 2 equally skilled players, one with and the other without will probably be a somewhat unfair fight for the one without. but that doesent guarantee that the person with the abyss gear will automatically win.

he will have the upper hand for sure, but it doesent take many mistakes for that to go down the drain. 1 wrong skill and he could very well lose.

contrary to what the gear in WoW does, there you can almost do nothing but mistakes and still end up winning :) atleast if you have some form of proper defenses.

Coming prepared with consumables is more important than abyss gear.

Hell I gathered some rare-ish items today that have a 30 min cooldown, but give 5000hp :p

those+pot+antishock scrolls = +7000 effective HP ( well if my HP was > 5000anyway :p ).

You need flight time pots, flight speed scrolls, anti-cc pots, health pots, mana pots, anti-shock scrolls...etc just to be competetive ( actually 95% of the people I've run into havnt been using them...thanks for the free kills guys :p

Any opinions on how the Abyss will look when we're all lvl 50? Will there be room for small group roaming or will it just be zerging? Does the game emphasize zerging over small scale fighting? Or do you get (considerably) more AP running a well tuned set grp than in a zerg to promote that type of gameplay? I'm really hoping this isn't turning into another Warhammer where full group roaming was such a niche thing.

I know the fortresses and such are there for large scale battles, but considering they're on timers and such I'd hope for some varied action in between.

Zerging only occurs at fort battles, the best way to farm AP is going to be small scale groups.
