Aikido Information

Has anyone here ever done Aikido? I'm interesting in taking up a class in a martial art, and wondered what it was like. I've done Tai Chi (as self defense rather than as exercises) and Karate, as well as various non-oriental martial arts (fencing mostly, lots and lots of fencing), in case you want to compare it to something.

Hehe, good luck..I really want to be one of those cool karate dudes but its boring to learn. :(

I joined a club and went for 6months, this women joined and after 2months was a black belt...she so shagged the sensai.

There's no way you can be a black belt in 2 months.

Anyway Will, never tried Akido but I have trained Karate, Kung Fu and Thai Boxing.

If its exercise you want, I'd recommend Thai Boxing. If its more learning the art then I'd recommend Kung Fu.

Always Judo but...pfft ;)

/edit: I did Wado-Ryu Karate btw, what did you two do?

Ah, but my girlfriend does Kung Fu, so I can't do that...can you imagine going along to a class where your other half has been there over a year longer and can kick your ass?

Though the foot height difference means that probably wouldn't happen.;)

Helping her practice for her grading is what has got me interested again. I found after twenty minutes sparring, I had gone from being able to kick at about waist height with a large number of popping noises, to being able to kick right over the top of her head.

I think it'd be fun training with your gf tbh.

I did Karate with two work colleagues and it was most relaxing smashing into them after work if they'd pissed me off in the day ;)

As for being a foot taller, heh a girl in my Kung Fu class is about 5ft and rock hard :)

To be honest, I don't like the sound of her Kung Fu class, it places too much emphasis on sparring and power, and not enough on the softer side of martial arts. The Tai Chi I used to do has made me a fan of redirecting energy rather than wasting any of my own.

There is a Aikido class that I can get to fairly easily, and it has a good reputation amongst her Kung Fu buddies, so it looks fairly good. I just wanted to know if anyone had done it before.

I'm trying to avoid something like Karate, which was a little too direct for me, no throws/grabs at all.

And I can't hit my girlfriend in the head...I just find I aim away at the last minute, and I got an elbow in my kidneys for the trouble.

Karate was poo when I did it. What do the Japanese know about fighting ? :p

Tae Kwon Do was much better. Big meaty kicks and smashing stuff :)

Too lazy to keep doing either though :)

I found out something the other day which surprised me...

The definition of black belt is "ready to learn" and it signifies when you really start doing any martial art at a serious level...

I have thought about this for a while now since becoming alot fitter. Thing is, there are no decent classes in dundee and the ones we have are usually filled with tossers.

I can see will's point of view, but I'd honestly like to try both soft and direct hardcore martial arts.

On a side note: I like the sound of your gf Will.

Tai Kwon Do looks like far too much effort. Balancing on one leg all the time.

And the classes tend to involve big people kicking the shit out of each other, which I really can't be bothered with. If I wanted that, I'd go down the pub and start a fight.

Heh. There aren't any photos anyway.

I've not uploaded them yet. Mostly because they are some of the worst pictures of her I've ever seen. I shall be taking some next month to add though.

When she is belly-dancing at a local restaurant. Belly-dancing instructor for teh win etc etc.

Back to martial arts talk now.;)

When's the release date?

I used to do JuJitsu but stopped when I got lazy. And got beaten up by white belts because they were stronger than me :( I might start doing something like that again while I'm at Uni though, if I can find someone suitably weedy to go with.

Don't tell them.

They'd never bend down again.

Akido is great... the place I trained, it was all very quiet, everything was clam and controlled, and everyone wanted to be there.... not very hard to learn, but that depends on the teachers I guess.

(the karate class next door looked like it was full of would be martial arts actors... lots of noise, no substance)

Akido is great if you have the patience... if you get to use weapons, it becomes even more fun :)

sparring with staff or wodden katanas is very cool

:D

I took Aikido for about 4 years between teh ages of 12 and 16. My mates dad was the sensai :) Got to blue belt I think.

It is a very good martial art, although if you're looking for something you can use on the street it's not really that great. Very much turning other people's energy against you and lots of set moves.

Thanks, that's the sort of replies I was looking for. I think I'll give it a go then, I've done lots of stuff before that was aggressive, I feel like a change.

true whipped, but if someone tried something, you get him in a proper arm lock, then there's F-ALL he can do :)

I did Ju-Jutsu when I was younger.... martial arts without the fluff.... damn handy on the dangerous streets where I used to live :)

If you want one of the purest martial arts, try kendo.

If you want any more info, I'll chat to you later about it on IRC or sommat - I'd really recommend it if you can find a good place.

Kendo = swords?

I've kinda had enough of sword-based things, I did sabre fencing for about 10 years.
