my poc runs daoc fine except for the following zones.

mass rvr with lots of peeps and instance zones.

havent done the system clear out yet ( gonna try it tonite)

but wats the most worth while thing to change for the money.

system at mo is 2.8 athlon, 1gig ram, geforce series 6900gt gpx (256mb)

system has plenty of power with a 600 watt psu.

would an increase in ram be a cheap option ?

runs games like startship troopers and rogue trooper without a problem, its just an online thing.

my connection is via a belkin 54g wireless adsl router (on a 1 meg line)

advice?

first of all defrag and cleanup your puter, if you dont want anything fancy use classic models as this will increase performnace.

Upgrade to 2Gb of ram and see ehat that does.

You might want to change teh CPU to an athalon 64 fx type chip, although this will most like need a rebuild of the puter

With that rig it's got to be a software issue if it is not running smoothly, guessing you mean a 6800gt gpu, as 6900 suffer from ... well not being made

More memory is the cheapest option. However, if you are not dual logging then the problem prolly lays somewhere on other software running aswell (Norton AV? etcetc)

Also, it will prolly always lag a bit with loads of people. Unless you wanna spend top dollah on an über setup.

Then, a new CPU... You said you had a 2.8 Athlon.. 2.8GHz or 2800+ ? Either way.. with 2.8GHz it's fine too. 2800+ model might wanna upgrade.. but again, doubt that's the bottleneck. So, if you do want a CPU upgrade.. do not bother with FX type's. These are way more expensive then normal models, because their multiplier is unlocked. This is for the overclockers, normal use of these babys is a waste of money.

My guess would be to:
a) Clean up the pc, get rid of unwanted software (things you do not use), get a registry cleaner, scan for spyware/virus. Use a light AV (AVG like, not norton!!). And try to have atleast 1GB of free space on your C: drive (required for windows swap file).

b) Reinstall windows, only install the minimum software required. Thus, things you dont use: dont install. This should help alot.

c) If a or b doesn't work, upgrading memory would be cheapest. Upgrading the CPU would be more costy, but MAYBE worth it. This would prolly (99% sure) include a new mobo (motherboard) since the socket differents. This would mean you want a 939 (second hand?) one + CPU.. or the new AM2 + CPU stuff. If you're an AMD fan, but you could try an intel conroe solution too.

Long post :X To be short: upgrading would cost alot, and i think the problem is other software slowing down your computer. gl with it.

have sorted some problems out by running classic for the time being, even camelot id less laggy.

i dont run norton but run avg as i think its better, i dont run my firewall on my pc as the router has a very good one ( and i found the two firewalls annoyed wach other)

Ill pop into pc world tonite and pick up some ram, i have a slot free so ill get another 1ghz.

my processor is 2800+ so perhaps i should look into that as well while im in there...

I see most M/boards are now PCI-e so thats annoying as my gpx card is awesome....

Ill also clear out the other stuff on my pc and do a clean up....probably needs a damn good defrag :p

cheers guys will let ya know

If it comes down to upgrading;
How to identify and buy the right memory:

download and run the following:
http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-135.zip

Now look at the SPD tab, which will tell you the make, model and size of your memory.
Click the motherboard tab and search for it in google to see what the maximum ammount of memory you can have in one slot on the board.

now you have what ram you need to find and the maximum size for 1 chip,
browse the following:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/ - very reasonable apart from peripherals and delivery is a little expensive
http://www.dabs.com
http://www.komplett.co.uk
http://www.aria.co.uk/
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/
http://www.ebuyer.co.uk
http://www.insight.com - take with a pinch of salt, i only used them once and the delivery time sucked
http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/index
http://www.crucial.com/uk <-- look here for memory as they sometimes have offers which are VERY cheap
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/
http://www.scan.co.uk
http://www.refreshcomputers.com/ - dont usually find cheap deals on here but worth a look anyway
http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/index - not used them myself

to see where you can get the cheapest deal,
remember to include delivery costs
