Ok recently i've really got into making toasted sandwiches, they're quick, filling and damn tasty. Therefore i've undertaken a mission to make the ultimate toasty.

Currently i'm only on day 1 testing and therefore havent got too far. I've gone from the average plain cheese toastie to a nice 3-types-of-cheese, bit of onion, 3 slabs of fried bacon and sauce of choice.

What i'm asking is what do YOU like in your toastie and what do you think the ultimate toastie should consist of ? Any small tips to offer? (I've discovered having a small bit of cheese on the outside of the bread gives it a lovely extra bit of crisp and flavour for example)

I hope to keep you updated as i progress :)

Toast slies of white.

Then stack it so:

Bread
butter(or marg whatnot)
cheese (by taste, cheddar works)
BIT of mayo(garlic)
meat of choice
slice of cheese(gream cheese)
meat of choice
BIT of mayo(garlic)
cheese(same amount/type as the first)
butter(or marg whatnot)
Bread

Squeeze together.

Nuke in the micro for a good amount.

Eat.

How do you actually make a toasted sandwich, the only toasted sandwich i ever have is Tuna+mayo, I just grill one side of the bread, turn it, put the tuna in the cooked side then close it then cook other sides. You can do it in a microwave?!

down with sandwich making devices!

Toastie makers dont work for me, you simply can get enough filling in and close the damn thing, then youve got to scrape all the burnt stuff out of the cracks. Oh and of course the entire thing has to be coated in fat to begin with..

Club sandwich for me.

chicken, bacon, iceberg lettuce (or assorted salad leaves), tomato, cheese, mayo, wholegrain bread, lots of seasoning.

All Cooked under the grill. Toast bread under the grill for a min each side, and if you can fit the whole thing back under the grill at the end (without burning the house down or electrocuting yourself) so much the better ;)

I strongly urge anyone who thinks of 'microwave or toastie maker' when preparing your food to try them.

how are you doing the bacon, do you cook it before hand and then shove it in the toastie?

cut it into strips about 2-3cm long by 1cm wide then stick em all into a frying pan (with no oil) and fry until cooked to preference. I like the fat on my bacon crispy so i fry em for a while.

brie is also really nice with bacon

edit: and yeah i use a toastie maker. The trick with getting lots of filling in is to work out where the pockets of filling go, you can then fill these bits and leave a diagonal line empty through the bread.

Also when using a toastie maker make sure you butter the side of the bread that goes onto the heat plates, this means that the toasties won't stick and you get a lovely golden brown toastie of perfection

I use my George forman grill for toasties, it lets you get alot more fillings in :)

Fav Toastie has gotta be tuna with ketchup and vinegar mixed with cheese and beans.
