ADSL problems

My ADSL USB connection works fine for the internet and e-mails and for playing HL TFC CS DOD etc but when I use it to download files from Kazaa or Grokster etc my computer resets itself after about 20 mins. It's really annoying because I keep losing files. The computer has a 1G AMD cpu on a 663AS ultra motherboard with 256megs of memory and an old geforce card with 32megs. The whole thing works great (really it does) untill my modem starts working intensly then it decides to reset. My flatmate connects to the internet through my computer but it still resets if his computer is not connected to mine or if mine is not downloading files and his is. It is not a problem with the modem itself as I've tried different ones of my friends.

It's your ISP sending a powerful spike up your modem line when they detect you're downloading donkeh pr0n and crashing your computer.

The best way to fix it is not to download so much donkeh pr0n. Go for g0at pr0n. It's harder to detect.

does this mean it does or does not show the same behaviour with different modems.

anyhoo, I'd advise getting a powered USB hub and sticking the modem on that.

btw, Kenny's right

Peer-to-peer file sharing thingies (techie term) are nasty and messy protocols anyways, blatting far too many packets around.

I'd say more, but that would be norty;)

It does show the same behaviour with other modems. I had thought of getting one of those pci usb2 cards but wasn't sure if that would help?

I do have a sattelite dish but I had a little to-do with sky a couple of years back so all I have is the free channels; unless you know someone who can sell me a dodgy card.

Only joking, I don't really want a dodgy sky card and I'm sure nobody here would know how to get one:)

If it's BTOW ADSL what do you expect Mal ? Move away from the cowboys and get a decent ISP.

Ignore everyone except TdC, a hub MAY sort your problems. A pci usb card deffo will as long as it's based on the Lucent chipset. Alternatively sort out your onboard usb. Try installing the latest Via 4in1s and USB patch (I'm guessing you're on an amd+via combo as I've not heard of this on an intel machine)

I wasn't asking you ya cheeky sod; the laziest tfc player in the universe who builds an sg then goes and watches telly, popping back now and again to see if his sg is still in one piece;)

Assuming yr using XP, have a look in device manager and properties of each USB device /power management and uncheck Allow this computer to turn this device to save power.

I've installed a pci card and now the computer resets every 1 and a half hour instead of every 20 minutes, so there is an improvement but not a complete solution:)

Check what drivers you are running with the modem. Mine had serious problems (disconnection whenever I tried to upload more than 1 meg).

I'm on 1.61r and it's being pretty stable, Going for 5/6 days before needing a reboot.

I do have the latest drivers for my modem and the 4in1 thingy; I'm not even certain what exactly is causing my PC to restart, only that it only does it when I download lots of data. I have tried reinstalling win xp but not since I bought the new pci card so I might try another clean install tomorrow unless someone can think of something else I could try?
