So I went to the supermarket, was gonna get a small bag of doritos (45g) but they were 60p. The 225g bag was only £1 so i got them. Opened them up, ended up eating the whole bag, then realised the amount of salt I had just eaten..

Why are the small bags so expensive yet the larger bags are cheap?

Because production cost is the same, regardless of bag size - with small bags they build revenue, with large bags they maintain customer base, by giving you the option of eating as much as you want/can.

Sure, there's more product, but inherently, the large chunk of production cost in a bag of doritos is not the actual product, but the bag, the printing on it, promotional items/bands it may have...

Simply put, you're paying for the bag to be eye-catchy and for the brand image - actual product cost, if you would get it in a simple transparent plastic bag would be 20% of the shelf cost, maybe less.

Sell small packs with more 'cause the health nuts buy them to "lose weight" or some such, then you can sell big bags for less so the joe regular will buy more.

I highly doubt that is the reason.

Its most likely to do with the fact that everything is cheaper in bulk.

A 6 pack of cola is something like £2 but a can is £0.60-£1.00 on its own. Doubt its because of health nuts.

That's a far too sensible answer for FHOT - pack that in right now!

The answer to the question 'Why are the small bags so expensive yet the larger bags are cheap?' is:

GOVERNMENT CONSPIRACY.

Chilli Heatwave are clearly the nicest, with the cheesy ones used to soothe the palette. Mix those flavours up imo. :)

I don't think it's to do with economies of scale.

It's a mixture of what old.OSY said and an adapted form of price discrimination I'd say.

Their margins are mahoosive. The small packs are marked up for retail, so the go for anywhere from 45pence to 60pence for a smaller bag. They are snack impulse buys - if people are out and about they will buy them for convenience. The larger bags are sold to retailers as promotional buys usually, walkers for example used to sell us £1 promo bags of multi-packs or large bags at woolies, everyone makes less margin but they are footfall drivers and good last minute impulse buys.

the mark up on chinese food is 600%

so when you've paid £20 eat as much as you want at your local chinky buffet joint...

I get this with peanut M&Ms tbh, I think i'll buy a bigger bag because it actually works out cheaper and I'll just have a few then save it becuse the bags resealable right?

pfft! big fat waste of time that is its like jordan wearing knickers tbh...pointless!

so I have a few and before I know it the bags empty and due to multicoulourings of said snack my fingertips look as if I have some strange form of leprousy...theres another jordan tie in but i'll leave that to your imaginations there.

My mate fell asleep on the plane the other week. I managed to balance a pringle between his lips. He looked like one of these

So when we eat 2-3 plates thinking "yeah, i've got my moneys worth" we should really be eating 12-18 plates?

The most expensive part of a Chinese meal is the meat, which there is usually very little of. You can get 5 chicken breasts for £4-£5 from the cheapo section that will probably be enough for 10-20 Chinese meals. Lots of oil and cheap spices.
The whole point of Chinese food is to make a little go a long way.

I got the following on holiday for 2 people -

soup/spring roll to start
rice or noodles
pork in orange sauce, roast duck, chicken curry
bottle of wine
coffee

for 6 euros each! Had it twice and we wernt sick either time, so i reckon it was decent value.

When I was in Germany a few years back I had some paprika crisps in the same style as pringles, they were so much nicer but I have long since forgotten the name.
