Can anyone suggest why my PC locks up? It mostly locks during disk intensive tasks like creating ISOs on HD or copying a large file from another PC but sometimes it locks up while idling.

Config is:

WinXP (base version)
KR7A-133 (standard voltages, etc)
Athlon 1.9XP
1 Stick of 512Mb Crucial DDR-2100
Radeon 8500
SonicFury
3Com 10/100 NIC
Maxtor HD

CPU temp hovers around 50c and I've got the latest BIOS, Via 4-in-1 & other hardware drivers.

Any ideas?

Cheers

The peeps over in the hardware/technation forum would probably be of greatest help there mate... that's where all the techy geeks hang out anyway :)

this is an historic moment in the BW Forums history.

tbh, that core temp is pretty high. is that under load? or at rest?

That looks like a pretty good place to start. Good old AMD, PC and central heating boiler combined.

50C is fine. A bit warm, but not hot enough to cause lock-ups.

Anyway... off to hardware forum with me...

Aye, mine runs at 40-45 idle and 55-60 under stress. 50 is no problem at all.

heh, almost - don't forget the quicker, smaller or more complex semiconductors get the lower the operating temperature before you see instability...

so a 1.4Ghz tbird @ 55C would be more stable than an XP1600 at the same temp...

anyhow, off to the hardware forum to see if he's got an answer... worst case someone has recommended he runs without a HSF to keep the chip nice and cool ;)
