ok folks, updating my old N73 to a higher firmware level in the vain hope of curing it of whatever ails it failed last night due to the nice non standard usb cable the fools at Nokia came up with being a bit dodgy. So failure :/
The phone now does mostly nothing: it can "turn on", meaning the keypad lights up but the screen stays dark. It can connect to the computer, meaning my Vista says an unknown USB device is connected....to later claim the device is broken with the helpful advice of "replace the device" :/
Nokia software/firmware updater no longer sees the device.
I've tried the three finger salute on it, +/3/greenphone and then turning it on with those buttons depressed, but no joy :/
Any tips besides binning it? It actually is still under warranty, but I'm not sure that covers failed flash attempts
