I'm so royally screwed it's not even funny.

So there i am on my main pc just browsing a lil on fh whilst taking a break from some lap reports. Then all of a sudden the laptop decides to suicide and kill its self right infront of me. Thus taking to the grave all my work which consists of 4 lap reports and some cad stuff, and which also happens to be due in tomoz. Fuck a duck, doesn't get any funner than that :(

no offense of anything but really not in the mood for poor attempts at humour.

Sounds like good advice to me, not poor humour.

How did your lappy die? Is the HDD now a big block of charcoal?

it's basically an expensive paperweight as it won't even boot up.

Presumably the computer you're typing on now works, so can you not take the HDD out of your laptop and put it in the one you're using now to take the data off it?

Can you not take the HD out and plug it into either another laptop or your PC?

I *think* newer laptops have SATA HDD in them so that would be pretty straight forward to put in your (SATA) desktop, if either machine has PATA drives then that's trickier and would need an adapter, again, I *think*. My knowledge of laptops is very limited.

If you're completely clueless about computers and don't fancy trying it yourself then do you have any more knowledgeable friends?

Either way, all is not lost. Your data is probably still there, just might need some creative thinking to get it back.

If the laptops fucked surely there wont be any harm in attempting to take the fucker out with a hammer.

I bet once you got the lappy open it's fairly straight forward. There are many guides on the web that will show you how to connect it to your desktop aswell.

Have you got a boot disk for the Laptop most ask you to make them when you first get the laptop, this may let you get it back without removing stuff. Just don't format it..

Failing that I'm sure you can probably download one and burn it off your PC that your using now, what model Lappy you got?

Actually Vista is usually pretty good for fixing it self, if its blue screen of death its probably your GFX card.

Put in Linux boot CD, burn your files on CD, done. It's quick and easy and at least the Knoppix distribution doesn't even need to install something. You just boot it, it detects the hardware you have, mounts the HDD and there you go. One of the best tools to recover data from your own or from other computers :p from most Windows Computers kinda =)

As long as it's only a crashed Vista, it's easy to fix. If some part of the notebook is broken, HDD out is the way to go.

Levi, reboot the machine and start hammering the F8 key. That should give you the Vista boot menu, select safe-mode. That will at least allow you to access your data.

Anyone else laugh at Lap Report...

Good luck with getting the data back. If the Hard Drive makes grinding noises try booting with it on its side, sometimes helps.

Backing up data is a pain in the ass, but it's even more a pain in the ass when shit like this happens and fucks you in the ass with a rusty spoon.
