Yeah not sure why people are so cagey about surnames...

Maybe its just like teachers don't want you to know their first names ;)

What's the worst people are going to do (realistically) if they find out your name on an internet forum? How realistic is identity theft just from knowing someone's full name and forum details? (assuming most people have non-static IPs, firewalls etc)...

if someone was businesslike about it and tracked a careless person then they may well gain a fairly large amount of information, but solely from an internet forum I would say that the risk is relatively small.

I tend to be carefull about certain pieces of information, however my last name is not something I am worried about people knowing.

I have exactly the same thing. We went on a holiday to the Dordogne as a kid, and I was sat in the back of a 3-door car driving past very deep, but slow flowing rivers, and I almost continuously had panic attacks about the car going into the river and not being able to get out.

I still have occasional panic attacks driving over Scammonden Water dam on the M62, which were significantly worse after I nearly had a crash there as well.

That fear kinda goes hand in hand with my fear of canals - a fear of being trapped in or under water.

Yes, but most humans didn't refuse to go near canals for several years ;)

It took me a good two years until I could walk next to a canal, and another year at least until I would walk over a canal footbridge. I've come a long way, and could probably cope with actually going on a narrowboat, but there is no way I could go through a lock on a boat.

Fear is a strange thing.

I thought I had a fear of heights, I did a skydive and now I am nowhere near as bad, infact I'd go as far as to say my fear of heights is cured.

I was looking around and I found this quote which really sums up what I think about fear (within reason):

"You gain strength, courage, and confidence by each experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, “I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.” You must do the thing you think you cannot do. "

I gained alot of self confidence after doing the skydive. Alot of other, smaller things that I have accomplished also give me more confidence in myself, so that when I come up against a problem in every day life, I can say to myself "come on, this is nothing compared to the skydive, you can do this".

The same was true about learning to ride my motorbike, - to a lesser extent - I was afraid of messing up and causing an accident, so much so that I wouldnt go on the main road, and instead ended up going up and down a small residential street with little or no traffic, however after a particularly long session of this backwards and forwards I just did it, went on the main roads and I was fine, I really enjoyed something I thought I was afraid of.

Not long after that I did a long journey on the bike, around 200 miles from middlesborough back to my home in norfolk, and now I use that as a confidence booster - if I find myself getting nervous I say to myself "come on, you've driven back from middlesborough, this is nothing compared to that, get on with it" and I find that more or less invariably my fear dies down to managable levels.

Fear is strange because its difficult to talk about, for me it is anyway, I find myself not wanting to talk about it and instead act like it isnt there. I think fear is a good thing though, it makes us stronger every time we do something we are afraid of.

I think the main thing about fear is control. You are rarely afraid when you are in control, and although control isn't the only factor, it certainly contributes a lot.

I feel much more scared going across dams etc when someone else is driving rather than me. This isn't because I think I'm a better driver (although obviously I am  ) but because I'm in control or not.

I'd guess this relates to the skydiving thing, as you chose to do a skydive when and how you wanted to. If you had been thrown out of a plane with a parachute against your will, you would have been much more afraid, even if the situation was the same.

Yea I guess I can see what you're saying, when I say the skydive was a confidence booster I dont mean to make it sound like I could do it again without being just as nervous before hand, what I do mean is that when I come up against smaller problems that put me into a situation where something bad has happened I seem to beable to keep my cool alot more easily, the fear is still there but I am no where near as stressed as I would expect, and I remember to think and to be calm and logical about my decisions.
