That problem is not really unique to Ireland. I saw the same thing on TV in Germany and it's rather simple. Cocaine just sticks on the notes and won't go off easily, so it doesn't take that many people to slowly "contaminate" all the notes. Don't forget that the euro has been in use for several years now, which gives enough time to get lots of money around. Now include the mentioned "cross-contamination" and we're talking about a rapidly growing feature on banknotes.

Well, in a 0.000001% you COULD catch it.

A: HIV positive guy cuts himself while snorting, causing a droplet(miniscule) to attach into a flake of coke.
B: You happen to get the same note and the flake with a contaminated bloodcell is still intact and not somewhere around the world in a cash register.
C: This note has been in ideal conditions, heat moisture etc to keep the HIV virus active/dorment in the single cell.
D: You cut yourself, in whatever action you do, on the same note, on the same spot that the HIV cell is on.
E: Your immune system can't cope with the single cell HIV organism at all and you get infected.

Quite reasonable to say that you could get it if you were the unluckiest guy on earth

yeh was going to say there is a statistic like that, and i think £5 notes are more likely to be contaminated or something along those lines. maybe its £10 notes that are most likely to have traces of coke on them?
