I'm sorry for this rant, but I'm in a foul mood and really need to shout about all this :)

Ok, about a week ago I noticed a clunking sound coming from my PC. After each clunk the Os would freeze for a few seconds then carry on until the next clunk. Obviously, Hard Drives on its way out. Now, being a little slow, I decided that it had to be the OS drive that was going. The OS drive was a 7 gb partition and the D: drive was the rest of this 80 GB drive in another partition.

So, I copy everything I need to keep off my D: drive to my recently purchased 200 gb SATA drive. I order a nice, new 300GB SATA and wait for it to arrive.

Drive turns up last night. I remove my original 80GB drive and try and remove a 20GB IDE drive I had as well (Tried because the screw is threaded and I couldn't be assed trying to get the thing out :))

I unplug my original SATA drive and plug in the new 300 GB. Partition it up and install Windows on it. Very nice running the OS from a SATA btw. Ok, so with disk letters and everything all sorted I plug my original SATA drive back in and startup the PC.

*clunk* *clunk* *clunk*

There was nothing wrong with my original IDE drives!!! It was this piece of shit Seagate SATA drive that's been clunking and now I have around 150GB of important data stored on the thing!!! Arghhh!!!

On top of that I must have left my original SATA cables and power convertors at my Exs when I moved out, so I had to drop a tenner at PC world for cables :(

I finally got the original SATA drive to play ball this morning in safe mode and it's currently copying all my data to my new SATA drive.

Once this is done I must try not to destroy the Seagate drive in a fit of rage and instead get the damn thing replaced on warranty.

Sorry for the long rant. You can feel safe in the knowledge that I feel about 1% better now ;)

Looks like the old drive may well be covered under a 5 year warranty :)

nice then, so you'll end up with two working satas at the cost of some rage :)

Yeah, although if this is a recurring problem with that model of Seagate drive, I don't really want to have to replace it ever 12 months. As that is how long I'd had this one. In fact, it was near enough 12 months to the day that I got the thing that it started making noises :)

I dunno mate. You could wait and see, or else flog the thing and get a different one? I've got a Hitachi Deskstar which once lived under the IBM de(ath)(sk)star flag and tbh it's given me no problems at all.
