Well, personally i'd come out and tell him straight off that he needs to let you have a little bit more space to breath. However, chances are he does this because he is insecure so you might want to gradually tell him so over time so that he can realise the fact that he is perhaps being too 'close and clingy.' Also, perhaps you can introduce him to more people so he has a wider range of people to hang about with. Usually people follow one person because he/she is the closest and only thing they've got. Show him the ropes, get him some drinking buddies and calmly get it into him that their is a whole world out there.

Ofcourse, if none of that works then tell him 'your scaring my gf, kindly bugger off'

you your self understand they are not happy

you continue not to care that they are unhappy.
