while my original post was admittedly a crass over generalisation, i still maintain the opinion that it is hilarious 90% of the idiots in those pubs probably have no idea who st. george is, the significance of the day or whatever else (neither do i, difference being i don't celebrate it/care), but they feel it's a perfectly good reason to get pissed up. not that they usually need an excuse either way.

Saint George is a Saint of the Orthodox Church. He was a soldier in the Eastern Roman ("Byzantine") Empire and lived in Syria in the 4th century AD. Having him as the English Saint is an Epic Fail. There are plenty of better alternatives to be had although Thomas More would be my personal choice.

I always wanted the Venerable Bede, i've long since advocated the dropping of George who was an affectation from the Crusades. A partron saint should be relevant to the country. Or even go back to Edward the Confessor who was the patron saint prior to george.

We don't even need to have a saint. Its an outdated Christian system that isn't relevant in an enlightened society. I wouldn't even call England a Christian country any more. There are more people that either couldn't care less which sand fairy you prey to or are non-Christian religious.

We should still have a national day to celebrate being English, despite how unpopular national pride is, we just don't necessarily have to link it to some Christian celebrity.

I really don't have a problem with the day being linked to a Christian Saint; national pride is important though and it really should be a national holiday.
