A question of ADSL

Hi all. I am faced with a decision. Recently My BT exchange has been upgraded to take ADSL. However I am unsure wether to get ADSL. I am currently on ISDN, with an avg ping of 80-90.

Is it worth going for ADSL? If so what company is best to take ADSL with?

Also although gaming wil be the major benifit, I do a lot of downlaoding etc, so ADSL will also help me there?

So is it worth it, and if so who should I take it through?

Dunno about the stablity of dsl for gamming. Most people i see with adsl though are complaining about one thing or another on game severs, mainly about there 250 pings;).

If your a happy downloader though, then adsl, cable or whatever will increase your daily catch:)

My counter this week has allready topped 15 gigs:eek:

PS if you can get cable go for that instead:)

ADSL is fine for games for me but cable would still be a trifle better. You won't notice too much difference over ISDN for UT. Downloading will be muuuuuuuuch better tho with either :D

I am using ADSL through Bellsouth in Birmingham, AL. While I am receiving subpar speeds around 350 - 450 kbs download and 50 - 70 kbs upload, my ping is very good on many servers, in the 30's and 40's. Speed can only help you but if you are an avid gamer, then I would go with the ADSL or Cable, whatever is available.

You will probably find better ping ratio on ADSL vs. Cable but you will probably find Cable a little faster.

As far as problems with downtime, I have experienced nothing but reliable steady on-line service with my ADSL.

Go for it..................

Cable is made for high bandwidth downloading, not for ping latency
ADSL is made for low ping latency, but has lower download speeds.

The trade off is somewhere in the middle :) Clanm8s of mine are on ADSL or NTL, tbh you'll notice not much difference in ping times.

This quarters stats:
' Totals - 4327 4908 4004 581 1 3 51.7% 39.7 85.5 30' <=====Average ping
Total 109 hrs so far.
Cable (blueyonder) really works for me:D - wish my game could live up to it :(

Yeah, that's about standard - I have BY cable modem, and I get pings of around 30. My lowest ever was 13! But I am about half a mile from the local headend, dunno if that makesa difference. I do tend to have the best ping on any server I play on, better than ADSL certainly.:D

The best place to learn about ADSL in the UK is http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ - it's a very good site and will fill you in on all the info.

ADSL differs from cable in that you can choose which ISP you go with - this can make a lot of difference to gaming. I've been looking into getting ADSL so have done quite a bit of research, and from what I've read the performance level for gaming varies quite a bit from ISP to ISP. BTOpenWorld are currently the cheapest, but they also regularly get slated from gamers for their poor perfomance - though some people use them without problems.

Personally, from all that I've read, I'd say that Nildram currently seem to be the best ADSL provider from gaming - they have a great network and also host their own servers on Jolt (which means it's only two hops to any Jolt server). The other ISP which seems to be good is Zen ADSL.

Before getting ADSL do some research - it's expensive so it' worth getting all the facts.

I have ADSL through BT openworld. My ping is usually in the 60's but packet loss & lagg are regular occurance.
I dont think you will notice much difference between ISDN & ADSL for UT but ADSL is cheaper & better for downloading.
My machine is on 24/7
If im not playing UT im downloading goodies.
